The clampi virus is in the news in a couple places today. Surprisingly it’s in Symantec’s virus database since January and rated as a low risk. However, the sole purpose of this trojan is to monitor your Windows based computer for connections to more than 4500 different financial related sites and log any usernames and passwords used to connect. When it finds your login information, that’s then sent along to a server that the trojan or virus writer controls and then they can transfer money out of your account or accounts.

It is a more troublesome variant of this rogue security software. Meaning that if you don’t remove Total Security 2009 it will eventually destroy your Windows installation requiring a reinstall. Windows PC Defender is a rogue antivirus application that resembles the legitimate antispyware known as Windows Defender from Microsoft. Their intent apparently is to mimic the look an theming of that application to trick potential customers into trusting and downloading (and paying for) their product. It is a clone of Windows Guard Pro and Ultimate System Guard. Like so many of these rogues, they simply change the names and recycle much of what they’ve used before. Rootscan.info? More Rogue Security Software on the horizon?
To follow up the last post about watching google hot trends….
I noticed an unusual search in the trends for rootscan.info. It currently seems to redirect to a site talking about rogue antivirus removal so it might not be anything, but the related searches for virus doctor, virus doctor removal, windows pc defender removal make me wonder if we’ve got another wave of rogue applications. Everything I see referenced is older though with the possible exception of Windows PC Defender.

Yes folks, it’s Windows Police Pro, the gift that keeps on giving apparently. It’s crawled back into Googles top searches tonight. Remove Antivirus Pro 2010
Antivirus Pro 2010 is another rogue security application that installs itself by ways of security vulnerabilities. This particular one seems to be installed by the braviax(cru629) family of trojans. It’s related to PC Antispyware 2010, PC Security 2009, and Home Antivirus 2010. It essentially claims that your pc is unprotected and makes false claims about infected files. Pleas do not send any money to the makers of these pests.

Updates – Rogues and Security….
I’ve been running a series of how to remove articles related to some of the current nasty rogue security applications that has really been getting a lot of traffic the last week or so. I can see that there’s definitely demand for more. Frankly, I hate these programs that claim so many problems (that it brings) and offer to fix it if you pay. I’ve made some links to these recent ones at the bottom of my antivirus removal tool page. I’ve also put up a page on ppt security – mostly centered around powerpoint security.
So, what might you expect to see in coming days? I’ll probably be doing some more in the malware removal series because there are some particularly nasty bugs out there and a thirst for some sort of guidance in removing them. I suspect beyond that I will be focusing more on antivirus and firewall areas because those seem to be in the highest demand right now (judging by the traffic I see here.)

Facebook Fan Check Virus
There’s a rumor going around and a lot of unconfirmed information that a facebook application known as fan check is actually a virus. I’m seeing several claims that if someone becomes a fan of this facebook app (which the page claims is undergoing changes and currently unavailable)… well if someone becomes a fan in the meantime their friends will all be notified of the app, password on the account changed, etc. I’m a bit skeptical at this point because EVERYTHING I see seems 3rd party and I don’t see anyone claiming that THEIR account was compromised. What I DO know is that some of the top search results are known malware attack sites. For instance the second result (which was the top result a few hours ago….
