Windows Smart Security is a rogue spyware application that may fool people into installing and purchasing due to the use of the words Windows and Security in the title. It may fool people into thinking that it is related to Microsoft Windows and perhaps even a part of the operating system. This is not the case and the application will scare the user with claims of viruses that aren’t there and offer to fix them if the user pays. Of course, paying for the software doesn’t solve all it’s problems, really it’s main purpose is to separate you from your money. In addition to fake warnings about nonexistent security problems this software will prevent some legitimate security software from running which might be able to remove Windows Smart Security from the system.

Malwarebytes Anti-malware
I’m usually a bit leery of new antispyware products. I do a first look at the rogue antispyware lists and just try to be as cautious as possible when moving away from the tools that I’ve tried and tested. I downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware very reluctantly to clean up a machine with “virus isolator” that nothing else seemed to be able to completely remove. It just seemed like the 10 headed hydra or something that kept coming back, so I found malwarebytes anti-malware recommended and must say it did the task quite well.

Spyware, viral cleanup disabling system restore
Sorry, but to get into the guts of what I found in the wake of the WMF exploit, I did leave out another important step in the cleanup process. IF you are trying to clean up an infested machine one of the first real goals has to be disabling system restore. (start, (settings,) control panel, system, system restore, and use the checkbox on that sheet, then ok to confirm.) This was one of the first things I did after infection to start the process of cleaning up. Windows uses system restore to keep copies of vital windows files. Unfortunately they can be viral/trojaned files as well.

Spyware news and musings
It’s funny, in the last couple days 180solutions had a blog post that was somewhat… what’s the term I’m looking for ? well they were quite defensive and concerned about “anti-spyware zealots” about “Scanning companies” and trying to work with them to explain their business model. Of course, legal action is not something they want to pursue, but if the business talks with the scanning companies fail, well it’s an option. Some months ago they claimed to be trying to clean up their act. Supposedly they were to crack down on “affiliates” using unscrupulous means to spread their ad content.
