I see a couple changes mentioned over at the official adsense blog. It looks as though there are new ways to customize search boxes for google adsense. Also it looks like there’s more assistance for those sufferers from Google adsense disorder.

Sendmail mail queue backed up
Sendmail is not my favorite MTA. I really prefer Postfix, but… I have to use sendmail in a few situations. I’ve run a little script on the web server for a good while to monitor the mail queue. I was running into a problem where I had LOTS of messages backed up. I suspected I had been hit originally by a spam onslaught which had flooded the server and it had been throttled (VPS) to prevent causing problems for the other users and things got backed up.

Global White Space Reset (CSS/html)
This may not be useful to many people, but I thought it was interesting. If you do web design and use css you’ll probably like this… I found this post at leftjustified.net about a neat way to “reset” the padding and margin css information which can help for designing sites to display the same when using CSS. Unfortunately, many browsers have little quirks in displaying css, maybe they have strange default settings which cause css placement to look, well, strange, from one browser to another… in comes this little trick…

Google indexing weirdness
In looking at my Google Analytics info…. I checked on the Northcarolinagenealogy.net site’s stats and found that it’s really dropped since about Friday or Saturday from decent traffic to next to nothing. (20 visitors a day now.) The first thing I noticed was no google.com referrers…. So, I started looking and sure enough the last Google search visitor arrived Friday. So, I started investigating further site:northcarolinagenealogy.net brought up nothing (as did site:www.northcarolinagenealogy.net).

The ideal Mandriva 2006 setup (for ISP’s and hosters)
How-to forge has what they describe as a copy and paste how-to up on the Perfect setup for Mandriva 2006 to meet the needs of ISP’s and hosters. It’s copy-paste because they suggest copying the commands and pasting them into the putty/xterm/console window on the machine that you’re setting up. It’s welcome to see this kind of “handholding” so people can see that it really is quite straightforward to get up and running with a linux server.

Another Google analytics update
It still looks like Google Analytics may be adding those that requested to be emailed when signups were available. I’ve noticed the last couple days the stats are MUCH more recent. It’s currently 20:00 hours “Google time” on December 1, 2005 and I see stats for my site through 15:00 “google time” in the analytics summary. So that’s pretty good, if it can be within 6 or so hours I’d say they’re doing pretty well.

How much is it worth to you to have a responsive website?
How can I say this…. this is one of the worst ideas I think I’ve heard this week from an ISP. (Maybe in a long time, but I’d have to think on that a few minutes.) An executive at Bellsouth thinks that ISP’s ought to be able to charge certain websites/companies to ensure responsiveness for that ISP’s users. In other words, they would want to charge say… Yahoo $xxxxx to make sure that the yahoo site is faster than the Google site for Bellsouth customers.

Microsoft Outlook – duplicate email messages Part II
This is part II, click here for part one of the saga…
Okay, so I revisit to install Microsoft Office 2003 SP2 and hope that solves it. Somewhere along this time, I had also found a suggestion of removing the entire mail PROFILE and creating a new one. *(The theory being that previous account information may still be in a profile in spite of the mail account being deleted.) Again two or three days go by and just when you thought it was fixed, duplicates AGAIN…. This time I had log information though, finally a second piece of log information to work with. -
Microsoft Outlook – duplicate email messages Part I
This will likely be a multi-part story because it turns out the solution was one of the more obscure things I think I’ve run into AND I thought it was worth “dumping” everything I found out in the process here for my own reference and anyone else wandering through. I have a customer that uses Microsoft Outlook 2003 and has selected to “leave messages on server”, then delete them when they’re deleted from the recycle bin. This normally works well, although I do recall one (or two) instances in the past when he got duplicates.
