It has been a few days now, but I noticed that WordPress 2.0.4 has now been released and is highly recommended due to the fixing of a few security issues. They also list a number of bugfixes as well. So, if you’re running a site based on wordpress it’s time to update. It’s really a fairly painless process. I do recall upgrading ONE site to 2.0.3 and it was quite painFUL…. things went quite wrong and I had to restore the database from a backup. BUT… I’ve now upgraded 5 or so installs to 2.0.4 without a hitch. (One was a 2.0.3 install and the others were (I believe) 2.0.2).

Speaking of botnets….
I seem to be getting the second flood of trackback spam attempts on the day. LOT’s of ip addresses, from all corners of the globe – most seem to be casino-related trackback spam. I guess botnets are being used for comment spam? It sure looks like a “100 pcs for an hour to do your bidding” kind of thing going on… There have been literally hundreds today alone (which is the first time I’ve actually seen this heavy a spam-storm. By the way…. I haven’t yet seen one slip into the actual comments… I attribute that almost entirely to a very useful WordPress 2.x plugin…

Cleaning out a few draft posts….
I really like a lot of features about WordPress. One is the ability to start a draft post and hang on to it indefinitely. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve spent a good part of the afternoon cleaning out a batch of some of the many draft posts I’ve accumulated over the last few weeks. (Along with some items that are fresh in the last day or two.) What I like about it is an opportunity to do a quick link in a post with a title and be able to retrieve that from any web-accessible computer to follow up on. It acts as a neat reminder or post-it note system as well.

WordPress plugin stattraq speedup
I’ve made mention I think that I use the stattraq plugin for wordpress as one of the ways to see where traffic is coming from on the site, etc. etc. etc. I think I mentioned it as one of my stat tracking tools about the time Google Analytics limped out of the gate… Anyway.. one of the things that had bugged me about it for some time was that it was SOOOOO slow to pull up any information (maybe a minute to pull in the page?) I had noticed a performance tip from the author…

WordPress trackback problem FINALLY SOLVED….
For around 3-4 months now I’ve had a REALLY annoying problem with the wordpress install on this site. Trackbacks suddenly stopped working. Somewhere around my 800th post or so while the WMF vulnerability was circulating (between Christmas and New Years) and I was typing furiously – poof…. suddenly trackbacks stopped going out. (Incoming trackbacks seemed to work just fine…) What’s had me stumped for so long is that I host 2 (now three) other sites off the same domain and I haven’t had a problem with ANY of those sending pingbacks or trackbacks.

WordPress update to 2.0.2
I had undertaken an update earlier this evening to a “sister site” here…. the onlineradiotv.com site had started out as a wordpress 2.0 site and I thought it would likely be the easiest to upgrade to 2.0.2 which is a security upgrade and therefore high priority, but I’m just now getting to it. I know why I’ve put it off though… I’ve spent the last 2-3 hours struggling with an issue after the upgrade process finished that gave me a message like this “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” on logging in.

WordPress 2.0 plugins
One of the real hesitations I had in moving current sites to WordPress 2.0 was the thought of “what plugins will break?” From what I saw the supported plugins list was short and so was the “broken” plugins list. Which said many were likely untested. So, after I installed a new wordpress 2.0 setup… I started copying over some of my favorite plugins (from my 1.5.2 sites) to see how they did.

WordPress 2.0 first impressions
Given that I’ve now had a chance to use WordPress 2.0 a bit, I thought I’d do a couple posts on some of my impressions. For starters, I’m quite fond of the interface for 1.5.2 that I use here. It’s comfortable, I’ve added a few plugins to make life easier and, well… I can’t find anything that just bugs me that I can think of. I do like the look of the new admin interface, it’s very similar, but with somewhat better color-scheming at the top (menu area) of the page. I like the Ajax-ified features in the post-writing tool. It’s convenient to not have to have a page load and go through “clunky” gyrations to add a category on the fly…. definite improvement….

New Site
I’ll be adding the links shortly, but I’ve got a new site roughed out… it’s along the lines of the previous post. I thought it may not have enough frequent posting to really be an eventful site, but it will have more info than I can devote here…. onlineradiotv.com. A good deal of what I want to put up initially is links to various broadcasters online feeds, especially those shortwave broadcasters with online content. However,
