  • Some links to purchase linux boxed set installs

OK, truth be told linux is usually thought of as a download for free and install operating system and there are LOT’s of ways to do that. But it is also available for purchase at various places, from the different distributions web sites.

Also, these are links to the product pages at Amazon. They have a new link style that I was curious to test out and see what it looked like.

  • Running Windows Applications in Linux another look at Wine

Recently I did a post on the release of version 5 of Crossover Office which is a commercially supported variation of the wine project. In fact, it’s very similar, the only exceptions I know of are the neater installer for software and paid support. Anyway, I’ve got a project I’ve been working on that I’ve used cxoffice quite a bit in to run a particular application that isn’t directly available on linux (there are alternatives but none that work exactly the same way… more on that in a future post…) Anyway, it got me thinking and I visited the wine site and found that 0.9.1 has now been released. I checked the wine version on my desktop and decided to upgrade to the newest plain vanilla wine release and see how well it does….

  • Google Analytics update

Well, I mentioned the release of Google Analytics yesterday which really looks promising. At this hour I can still say it looks promising. I had a funny thought after trying several times yesterday to get set up… it was a “good going, you just broke google” kind of thought. It was pretty clear that demand was VERY high for the service (what they’ll be providing for free used to be a fee service.) But it looks like Google has been really caught off-guard by the demand. As I don’t have any data yet, and it appears I’m not the only one.

  • Sony DRM Rootkit — it’s worse

I did this as updates to an earlier post, but it probably deserves it’s own post now. The morning brought us the news of SERIOUS flaws in the Uninstaller ActiveX control for Sony’s DRM, then came news of ANOTHER flaw, this one a privilige escalation “attacker can take control of PC” vulnerability in the DRM rootkit (XCP) itself. The other bit of news to come has been the extent of the install base of XCP.

  • Bad capacitors causing strange system behavior

This is, in fact something I’ve been getting ready to do an article on soon. I had a system that had very strange and random problems that I’ve visited and tried many of the typical fixes for, in fact I think I saw it a couple times a week and either couldn’t reproduce the errors on demand, or could only get an error once, do something and not see it again, then hear about something similar the next day…

Anyway, ultimately the system has been replaced (and it’s twin…) on inspecting the motherboard post-pull, there were some interesting issues with the capacitors, yellowish crusty leaked electrolyte… uh-huh, that explains everything…

  • How to create a redirect page, or creating a redirect page has been updated

Just a note to mention that I’ve updated a page that I published a good while back. It’s kind of a funny story. I skimmed through the logs and saw that someone got here on a search for how to create redirect pages, and had forgotten about the post, I looked to see what it was. I was redirected in about 5 seconds to a google search. (Firefox uses text in the address bar to the default search provider….) Ummmm… ok something’s not right, so…

  • Spamassassin Custom Rulesets

I’m starting this post in part as a placeholder for some information I’ve come across. I’ve been tinkering with my first custom spamassassin rule. I’ve tried the SARE rulesets and they seem to be missing one specific class of junk mail in my setup. (After verifying that the rulesets were actually being used), I set about trying to create my own rule to deal with the offending messages.

  • Microsoft Updates for October and bugs on the loose

Well, it’s been a bit since a post here, but if you haven’t already patch your systems with Microsoft update, as new updates were released yesterday. Incidents.org is reporting rumors of bugs in the wild. Everyone KNOWS the window between vulnerability and exploit is getting shorter and shorter, so if you have a windows system go forth and patch….

  • Good wireless security post

I found this one at The sunbelt blog, very good article referencing a talk on wireless network security by Xavier Ashe.
