  • Another Sober.y reminder

f-secure.com has another warning for us about the pending awakening of the sober worm. From reports it’s expected to start looking for sites to download from January 5th into January 6th. There is an extensive list of URL’s to block. This from f-secure.com – if you’re in charge of block lists at a network, this could be a good start to make sure you don’t have any clients pulling a new version from the following sites…

  • Virtual machine as a safe browsing environment

I mentioned this in my summary yesterday morning as a possible workaround until there are patches for the WMF vulnerability that’s been big news the last week. I notice that incidents.org has mentioned it too as a possibility today. VMware has released VMPLayer as a free way of running premade virtual machines.

  • Search Engines Submission

This is what hopefully will be the begining of a series of threads on webhosting, web marketing, etc. The first topic up is search engines submission. (This may take several articles…) It’s important to get your web site up and mostly fleshed out before submitting to search engines. Why? Although many may take some time before they spider your site, it is best to make sure that there is a fair amount of content available for them to spider. Some may actually spider fairly quickly, within minutes initially.

  • On Demand book publishing – iUniverse

The last entry in this series I looked at lulu.com which offers on-demand book publishing for those looking to publish their own book. The level of entry at lulu.com is nothing, no setup fee and they take fixed cost plus 20% of your profit which all told is not a bad deal.

This time around I’m looking at iUniverse.com which is backed by Barnes & Noble. They do charge to get started. The cheapest of their packages is $299 for those that aren’t interested in distribution of their work. (Just making it available through the iUniverse.com store.)

  • Another workaround for WMF exploit

There are at least two other workarounds for the Windows Meta File (WMF) exploit that I’ve been looking into this afternoon. These from sunbelt blog.

    First up…

    2. Change file associations for WMF files.
An equally ugly fix (but perhaps preferable) is to do the following:
    1. Go to My documents, Tools, Folder Options, File Types.
    2. Change WMF Image to notepad and select always open with this.
Your WMF files will open in Notepad. Ugly, but it is a fix.

  • Tracking Santa Claus online

In the spirit of the day before Christmas, I’ve come across a couple links to help you track Santa Claus’ progress around the world. First up the Google Blog points out that you can track Santa with their Google Earth software. They have a link here that will open in Google Earth –UPDATE Christmas 2006–This years link for the Google KML is here. (if installed. Google Earth is a free download and requires hardware video acceleration. The other link is a web browser based tracker… Norad has been doing this for a few years, this years version is at this link. (Flashplayer required.)

  • Adding swap space to a running linux system

There are acouple situations where my systems memory needs have exceeded the supply. The most likely cases are running virtual machines and building cd/dvd images. Those things realistically take LOT’s of memory. I have a swap partition – I don’t recall the size right off. I have about 512 MB on the desktop and probably for what I do could use to double that. Swap space, of course, is what the operating system uses when all the physical memory (RAM) is used.

  • The 2nd journey begins… Mandriva 2006 upgrade 2 – Part 2

OK – copying of the most crucial files are done. It’s time to start the process. First I’ve gathered a list of URPMI sources that I can use from online. No local mirror this time, so it may take a while to pull all the files I need. Second, it’s time to say #urpmi.removemedia -a to clean out our list of software install sources.
