  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 for Mandriva 2006

Mandriva 2006 released without Mozilla Firefox 1.5, it came with 1.0.6 (which included security fixes and other patches from 1.0.7)…. anyway, source rpm’s for Firefox 1.5 became available in cooker, so I’ve built rpm’s for Mandriva 2006 for easy management on my systems. I’ll post links here as they may be of use to others as well. …. These are provided as is, with no warranty express or implied, etc. etc. etc. The src.rpm is straight from cooker, so, if you like, you could build it yourself….

  • Clamav 0.88 for Mandrake 10.0

I’ve got a couple of older Mandrake 10.0 servers that I’m still maintaining. They’re systems that it hasn’t been practical (yet) to do an upgrade to a more recent release of the base operating system. Two of those are currenlty using Clamantivirus for their mailscanning. So, with the recent security vulnerability an update was needed. I basically took the clamav 0.88 source rpm from cooker and rebuilt on a 10.0 system. For convenience I’m posting ALL of these for download. So…. I’ll post the original src rpm from Mandriva cooker. (Which you could make use of to rebuild for another release of Mandrake.) And also the resulting built rpm’s….

  • How-to Remove SpyAxe and SpywareStrike

There’s a good post at Spyware Confidential about the removal of the SpyAxe and SpywareStrike pests that are circulating widely these days. There is a good CastleCops Wiki page with Malware removal information on SpyAxe (With screenshots). Also, there is a good walkthrough of removal here, which includes instructions for smitremfix.

  • WordPress 2.0 first impressions

Given that I’ve now had a chance to use WordPress 2.0 a bit, I thought I’d do a couple posts on some of my impressions. For starters, I’m quite fond of the interface for 1.5.2 that I use here. It’s comfortable, I’ve added a few plugins to make life easier and, well… I can’t find anything that just bugs me that I can think of. I do like the look of the new admin interface, it’s very similar, but with somewhat better color-scheming at the top (menu area) of the page. I like the Ajax-ified features in the post-writing tool. It’s convenient to not have to have a page load and go through “clunky” gyrations to add a category on the fly…. definite improvement….

  • New Site

I’ll be adding the links shortly, but I’ve got a new site roughed out… it’s along the lines of the previous post. I thought it may not have enough frequent posting to really be an eventful site, but it will have more info than I can devote here…. onlineradiotv.com. A good deal of what I want to put up initially is links to various broadcasters online feeds, especially those shortwave broadcasters with online content. However,

  • Basic Hardware troubleshooting

Sometimes machines stop working, or you install a new piece of hardware and just can’t boot again. That’s when you have to get back to some basics to troubleshoot what the problem is. Yesterday I saw a machine that wasn’t booting. It would display the splash screen and then power down. They had a new video card on a previous diagnosis using the indicator lights on the back (Dell). The add on card seemed to work, but the system was just not booting. Someone had suggested to them that it was a power problem.

  • How to use wireless networking on a laptop

This is one that I run into from time to time. Most laptops the last year or two (actually maybe a bit longer), have built in wireless networking. This is great and makes for easy access to wireless access points just about anywhere. In fact, most current operating systems (Windows XP included) usually do a great job of detecting available networks. (Sometimes they do too good a job which is why wireless security is an issue, but we’ll save that for a future post.) I’ve run into several laptops over the last few years though that supposedly had wireless networking, but the user hadn’t been able to access any wireless networks with the laptop. Usually it’s an easy fix….

  • New “Basics” category

I’ve added a new Computers-Basics category that will be a catchall for all sorts of “what is a” articles and hopefully very simple how-to’s (the kind of things that will have some viewers rushing for the exits, or the search boxes…) One of the things I like trying to do is explaining tech stuff in less than tech terms, or at least in an approachable way. On this site, so far, I’ve dealt with pretty technical issues and the kind of stuff that has a new user searching for an exit (probably the x in the upper right hand corner, or the back button), or maybe a translator. I hope that this series will not need extra referencing to understand. I’ll probably post to this category in spurts….

  • Manual Trackbacks

Sometime over the last 2 or 3 days trackback pings stopped working for me. I didn’t notice until today. I think the hexblog may have been the first one to choke the queue, but I’ve spent the evening going back and sending trackbacks manually. There’s a manual pinger at http://www.aylwardfamily.com/content/tbping.asp which is tedious for a couple dozen entries, but it does work.

  • XP Home support period

This is something you should consider if you are looking to abandoned a pre-Winxp operating system in favor of a flavor of XP. The product life cycle. In their infinite wisdom, Microsoft has different support plans for consumer products than “business-products”. As such… arstechnica.com has a post explaining why support for Windows XP Home will end the end of this year 12/31/06 and Windows XP Pro will continue to be supported perhaps as long as December of 2013.
