Remastering Ubuntu’s live disk
Many times I’ve used Ubuntu’s livecd to test out an ailing system, but more than once I’ve wanted to add a utility, yes you can apt-get install from the live cd, but that assumes the system has a working internet connection, it’s sometimes better to just build the cd yourself with the tools YOU want. Using the tips in this forum thread and this page, with help from this google search, I remastered my own custom version of ubuntu (with smartmontools among other things.) I consider the ability to make your own custom tools priceless when it comes to tech support.

Google Site: search issues
This is interesting…. there’s been a lot of frustration among some (myself included) with the current state of Googles site indexing. For a good while I’ve been able to consistently find ANY post on my site using google if I quote a certain amount of text that I know is on the page. Currently, such quoted text searches for pages that show up as “supplemental” in a site:averyjparker.com search… turn up nothing. In theory, the supplemental results SHOULD turn up when there are no others. (If I understand correctly…) I’ve been able to duplicate this with other site’s supplemental results as well, so it doesn’t JUST affect this site. Well, there’s an update at the official sitemaps blog that tells of some interesting issues with the site: search operator. It sounds like there might be a connection….

Search rankings and “where you stand”
Search engine rankings are one of the concepts that I think is vaguely understood. It’s amazing to me how a subtle change in a series of search terms (or quoting a pair of words) can so drastically alter the results. Let’s say you’re searching for discount shoes, there’s a difference between a search for discount shoes and “discount shoes”… Of course, if you’re hosting your own site…. it’s awfully nice to be able to get an idea of where you turn up in the search results for given terms. The biggest problem is…. most search engines give a chance for you to see if pages on your site are found with the terms, but that doesn’t tell where in the rankings you compare to other sites. The hard way of course, is to type in your search term and go from page to page until you finally encounter your site. This can be painfully tedious though.

Google Search Boxes
I’ve been tinkering with placement of Google Search boxes on the site. These days, with a google search box in Firefox, I don’t think about the convenience factor of putting it in the page too much, but…. At one point I had the box in the sidebar and it did strange rendering things for Internet Explorer, I think the new placement(s) shouldn’t give any problems.

200GB of optical storage anyone?
For those of you feeling somewhat cramped by the 4.5-9GB capacity of current single/dual layer dvds…. The inquirer has a story on what is coming…. Ricoh believes that by 2008 they can produce a 200GB optical drive that will be compatible with the Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats. The discs would have 8 layers (compared to Blu-ray/HD’s 2 layers).

How to create a redirect page, or creating a redirect page has been updated
Just a note to mention that I’ve updated a page that I published a good while back. It’s kind of a funny story. I skimmed through the logs and saw that someone got here on a search for how to create redirect pages, and had forgotten about the post, I looked to see what it was. I was redirected in about 5 seconds to a google search. (Firefox uses text in the address bar to the default search provider….) Ummmm… ok something’s not right, so…

Google to acquire evil from Microsoft?
I’ve seen this article referenced a few places today, but there is a piece at the New York Times, essentially the piece says that Microsoft can relax, it’s time for Google to be the villain. There’s a joke that went around sometime back (maybe at April fools?), joking about Microsoft about to buy exclusive rights to evil from the devil. That supposed article interviewed the devil and had him recounting what a good offer Microsoft had made for the rights…. anyway…

There aren’t THAT many phish in the sea, more on phighting phishing
The last post, I got sidetracked into another idea as I was doing a google search. Not uncommon. OK, what I was curious about is how many phishing sites are estimated to be “in the wild” at any given moment threatening to defraud viewers? Well, my search did turn up an interesting report. (more…)
