Spyware Confidential is writing of complaints from Wrestling fans of several wrestling related sites that have become sources of unsolicited spyware and adware installs. Some of them are aware of the spyware and encourage users to sign up for the ad-free service (pay) to avoid the problem. The spyware in many cases are installs that start without user intervention (or consent.)

Sunbelt acquiring Kerio Personal Firewall
Kerio Personal firewall will be acquired by Sunbelt according to the sunbeltblog. It looks as though the acquisition will be complete within a month. They hope to offer downloads “within weeks”. There will be a price reduction and discounts for Sunbelt users, and discounts for Kerio users on Sunbelt software. Also it looks like the free edition will continue.

Community site to help users understand EULA’s better
This is a great lead from Spyware Confidential. There is a relatively new site out and about called eulascan.com. They allow user submitted comments on EULA’s (End User License Agreements). Of course, EULA’s are the terms and conditions that pop up on installing software and (these days) appear on the packaging of everything from software to electronics to books.

Xubuntu for older systems
I can’t recall trying Ubuntu (maybe a livecd), but I’ve heard quite a bit about various variations on it lately. I’ve seen articles on business desktop use, certification by IBM (?) for running one of their applications and other various positive articles. I’m going to have to give it a try soon. Anyway, with all that this article caught my attention.

Free personal firewalls for windows will be a bit scarcer
It’s too bad that Symantec will be killing off a free personal firewall. I guess they didn’t like supporting competition for their (large) Internet Security with included firewall… About three months ago, Symantec bought Sygate who made a Sygate Pro and Sygate free personal firewall. Both the Pro and the free version will get the ax from what it looks like…

Sounds under the creative commons license – freesound
The last post was disabling unwanted sounds on a laptop running Mandriva 2006…. this is about an archive of Creative Commons licensed audio free for the downloading. The Freesound project boasts a collection of over 10,000 sounds. Mostly sound effects of various types. (Thunder, rain, record scratch, hens, etc. etc.) So, if you’re looking for some sound effects to customize your desktop or…

Some links to purchase linux boxed set installs
OK, truth be told linux is usually thought of as a download for free and install operating system and there are LOT’s of ways to do that. But it is also available for purchase at various places, from the different distributions web sites.
Also, these are links to the product pages at Amazon. They have a new link style that I was curious to test out and see what it looked like.

Spammers/ phishers looking to get past “turin test” images
A lot of web sites these days use “turin tests” to keep from having automated bots sign up for mail or other services. (Or post entries to a forum or something.) For those that don’t know, a turin test is a test designed to filter machines from people. I doubt I’m the only one that has occasionaly found one of those squiggly letter/number images to be so distorted that I’ve failed the test… Anyway, it seems that there is a new trend in phishing/spamming emails. From incidents.org they’re seeing some mass mailing attempts that seem to be aimed at getting people to identify “Captcha” graphics for them. (A captcha is basically the random number image used in many online turin tests.)

Google Analytics update
Well, I mentioned the release of Google Analytics yesterday which really looks promising. At this hour I can still say it looks promising. I had a funny thought after trying several times yesterday to get set up… it was a “good going, you just broke google” kind of thought. It was pretty clear that demand was VERY high for the service (what they’ll be providing for free used to be a fee service.) But it looks like Google has been really caught off-guard by the demand. As I don’t have any data yet, and it appears I’m not the only one.

Part 2 of the Mandrake or Mandriva 2006 review
I’m still not used to the name Mandriva, Mandrake is just what I remember… anyway, mandrake.tips.4.free.fr has the second part of their mandriva 2006 review up. It sounds as though in the last week the iso’s of the free edition are now publicly available as well. This time around special attention is paid to hardware support, and multimedia capabilites focusing on image handling/editing software.
