I just thought I’d do a quick post to mention that I’ve added a new category called “featured books” and it’s a place where, (more…)

Browser Statistics reaction
OK – someone has a sense of humor. In the hour after the browser statistics article where I said that on this site, Internet Explorer was being used by less than 50% of the viewers I saw an interesting thing happen. In the span of 2 minutes, 1 single IP address pulled EVERY link on the site, claiming to be browsing with IE 5.5 for a total of about 450 hits. Initially I thought, OK it’s either a search crawler masquerading as IE in the “User Agent” field, or somebody wanted to play with my stats. (more…)

Web browser statistics
In the last week or two, I’ve been playing around with a slightly different stat package for the individual sites, North Carolina Genealogy, South Carolina Genealogy and this site. Since it’s a new stat package, I’ve spent a good amount of time checking the stats to see just what browsers visitors are coming from, which ip blocks (local/distant), which search terms they’ve used to get here, etc. etc. One of the things that has surprised me is (more…)

The check’s in the mail
Of course, there was a time when delivery of many things relied heavily on the US Postal Service and the blame of a delay could be passed along. I saw an article lately about people using technology to do tricks like that, turning back the clock on their computer before answering emails, getting sounds for their cells phones that sound like passing traffic, or a subway, etc. This strikes me as pretty silly. But there are some legitimate reasons, especially when posting to a web page when you might want to go ahead and type something and have it show up at another time, or as having come out earlier. Busy Evening
I’ve got all traces of the old cms system off of the server now. (Well there might be a README here or there, but all php scripts from the old CMS are now gone.) At this point I can disclose a bit about the sudden move.

Archives of old Genealogy sites
I don’t know how many know, but one of my sidelines (hobbies) over the years has been Genealogy. Sometimes I’ve had more time for it than others. The last couple of years it hasn’t been something I’ve had much time for. However, the archives of two sites exist at this domain. The first www.northcarolinagenealogy.net has not seen a makeover in a LONG time. In fact, the second archive was meant to be the next revision of northcarolinagenealogy.net it is located here This second one will likely be changing soon as I look at converting it to the model I’ve used for the main site. Old posts
I’ve copied over several of the older posts from the ezcontents layout of the site. I think I’ll skip moving the “virus of the moment, watch out for….” posts. The ones that I’ve chosen are a bit more generic and can relate to many viruses (The connection between spam and viruses for instance is as relevant today as it was when I first posted from all I can see…) The bugbear virus on the other hand, hopefully, is probably not relevant these days.
For all the older posts I’ve tried to import them and preserve their original post date so as not to disrupt the flow of more current content. There is one recent post that I haven’t migrated on a recent site outage (due to the move of averyjparker.com to a new server which left mysql clueless until I figured out what it was missing.) I also hope to share the reason for a more recent outage (July 14-15th) in a few more days once all this is settled.

New site layout
Well, after spending a couple days looking at WordPress, I’ve now promoted it to be the main site layout. This software offers several improvements over what I’ve been using and if you are interested in running a blog site, or even a small managed site with the ability to do easy frequent updates, this might be a great choice for you.

Wow
This is an interesting moment… since last night I’ve been tinkering with wordpress. I’ve got it installed in a test directory. This afternoon I spent some time moving old posts over to wordpress from my old portal. I’ve got several plugins installed and I look at the stats plugin I setup earlier this afternoon. I only expected to see my visits there (and my Dad’s, and maybe my brothers, I’d sent them links), other than those, I didn’t expect any visits because, well it wasn’t linked from anywhere else on my site. Apparently the power of “ping” is greater than I thought as it seems I’ve got hits from a few sites and on looking, one of my posts is already in the IceRocket blog search

RSS feeds
Of course, it appears that wordpress comes with support to generate rss feeds for the articles and comments listed here. I was curious to find a way to include a syndicated news feed in the site and have. So, for the main page we have Yahoo news top stories (at least for now.) At some point I may look to putting other feeds on other pages, hopefully somewhat related to the content.
