  • Google Analytics under the microscope

I’ve spent some time this evening looking at Google Analytics. (Now the data is being collected.) And I’ve got to say I’m impressed with the scope of what I’m seeing. First, since last night, more stats have been collected, there seem to be some missing from today yet (maybe ~12 hours behind at the moment). When I signed up, I went ahead and created profiles for 4 websites that I run to have some different things to look at. I’ve spent about 30-45 minutes looking through the stats for just one of those.

  • Google Analytics stats start to trickle in

I’ve just logged back in at 1:11 AM EST, 11/16/05 and am seeing the stats from the 14th come in, some from the 15th. It looks like Google Analytics is starting to catch up. I suspect they’ve been working overtime to try and beef up the server resources dedicated to this project, hopefully things will continue to improve. I hope the former paying customers are going to get good treatment here….

  • Google Analytics update

Well, I mentioned the release of Google Analytics yesterday which really looks promising. At this hour I can still say it looks promising. I had a funny thought after trying several times yesterday to get set up… it was a “good going, you just broke google” kind of thought. It was pretty clear that demand was VERY high for the service (what they’ll be providing for free used to be a fee service.) But it looks like Google has been really caught off-guard by the demand. As I don’t have any data yet, and it appears I’m not the only one.

  • OSWD.org is back up

I’ve just looked and noticed that oswd.org (Open source web design). They currently boast 715 free templates. In their absense several other sites have sprung up to fill the void they had left… openwebtemplates.com is one such recent entry. There’s also openwebdesign.org with over 1300 templates. There are several sites that seem to be mirroring the original list of zipped templates from oswd.org, but I don’t find any others with thumbnails, openwebdesign.org appears to have the complete list.

  • How to create a redirect page, or creating a redirect page has been updated

Just a note to mention that I’ve updated a page that I published a good while back. It’s kind of a funny story. I skimmed through the logs and saw that someone got here on a search for how to create redirect pages, and had forgotten about the post, I looked to see what it was. I was redirected in about 5 seconds to a google search. (Firefox uses text in the address bar to the default search provider….) Ummmm… ok something’s not right, so…

  • Open Source Web templates

One of the things that I’ve really not looked at until lately is the use of open source web templates. I don’t know why but I’ve never really paid much attention to the thought of templates outside of those for a cms platform like wordpress or ezcontents, etc. However, recently I’ve started a site redesign for someone that wanted to use a template. So, an article on open source web design caught my attention.

  • Google search engine crawling experiment

Recently I’ve had an experiment with the way Google crawls a site. I had a client site that had not been spidered in spite of being submitted to Google a good while back. I looked at the site and saw nothing amiss. There was plenty of text on the page everything looked good. I found their page in google but their was no cached text.

  • The junk that you will find in web access logs

If you have a website, you likely will look at your logs from time to time to see just who or how many people are visiting your site. I’ve certainly looked at a lot of logfiles both for my site and for others and thought I’d pass along some things you will likely see. For starters you are likely to see requests for pages that don’t exist. Even if you’ve never made changes to your site, you may see requests for files like (more…)
