Here is a link to the info page. It sounds as though there are several images available. Mandriva 2007 Beta 1 has Gnome and KDE centric 586 and x86_64 versions of cd images for download as well as an all in one (well – both architectures in one) DVD and cd set (6 disc cd set). They’re interested in people testing it out and reporting bugs. Not all new features are enabled and it is BETA so use it at your own risk.

Microsoft Issues advisory on Powerpoint flaw
Here’s the link to Microsoft’s advisory. The main workaround seems to be…. Don’t open or save powerpoint attachments that you receive from untrusted sources, OR that you receive unexpectedly from trusted sources…. So, the only real workaround is what SHOULD be common practice. Whether or not there is a vulnerability in the news you should always be cautious with receiving file attachments. ANYTHING unexpected, even from a trusted source, should be verified “out of channel”.

VMWare server 1.0 final release
I’ve been keeping an install of Vmware virtual Server through their beta and Release Candidate phase and have seen several places that they’ve released the 1.0 version today. This release is free (as in no charge.) Although support is available….

Adobe Acrobat reader update
On the heels of yesterdays massive update day from Microsoft, Adobe has released an update for the free Adobe Reader. The Adobe reader is one of those ALMOST essential applications that MOST everyone has installed. So, this will be of particular interest to MOST computer users. A SERIOUS security flaw (They’re tagging it CRITICAL) could be exploited with a specially crafted PDF file in version 6.0.4 (or earlier – back to 6) of the Reader for Mac or Windows.
Version 6.0.5 has been released to address this. It should be noted that the current newest version available is 7.0.8….

Now we know what’s taking Crossover Office 6 so long…
I just read that Codeweavers has managed to get World of Warcraft working in Crossover Office in their development builds it should be possible. Of course, it’s been possible for some time to run it via Transgaming’s Cedaga. But codeweavers seems to be working on it in their Crossover product as well and are “testing it extensively”…. NOW I know why it’s taking so long for 6 to come out….

Mozilla Firefox use above 15% in the US…
and Internet Explorer use has dropped below 80% in the US. Currently 12.93% of online users browse with Firefox. Almost 40% of German web-browsers use Firefox to view the web. It’s nice to see Firefox’s share gaining. I, personally wouldn’t mind seeing SEVERAL competing, standards-compliant browsers with significant share’s. (Opera has moved above 1%.) I think (and hope) the day will come when it doesn’t matter a bit what browser you use (as long as it’s standards compliant.) Hopefully we’re moving towards that.

Windows 98 and ME in final days of support (6 by my count)
July 11th will mark the end of Microsoft’s support for Windows 98 and ME. Which means that there will be no further security updates for those systems after that date. In SOME ways, those systems may find comfort in the security through obscurity approach as much malware MAY not run on those systems, but that’s kind of a risky angle to play. For those that are willing to experiment…

Kubuntu discs arrived!
The five Dapper Drake Kubuntu 6.06 LTS disks that I requested in the week or so before release arrived in the mail today. Thanks Canonical. Yes, I do a lot of downloading, but a professionally pressed disk looks so much better to give someone to try out than a home made cdr written on with a sharpie….

FreeDos suspended development – nevermind
The Freedos has suspended development. It’s been a 12 year project and really, Freedos has become THE free DOS implementation around. It’s been shipped with “blank” pc’s, integrated into several other projects that use a dos’ish boot environment and the 1.0 release has not officially come. (I think the most recent is a Beta9 Service Release 2…) The site has been moved to freedos.sourceforge.net although, freedos.org will redirect to this eventually (DNS settling right now.) On many sites I’ve seen it reported as “freedos is dead”… and the comments are post-mortem style – however this is open source…. –UPDATE– OSNEWS had the original story and it seems like it was a joke of sorts as the dns had been moved to point to the new VHOST at sourceforge. In other words – no one was meant to see the Freedos is dead message at freedos.org… But still the following thoughts on the “death” of an open source project in general still apply….

Ubuntu-server 6.06 LTS plus vmware server and other vmware server notes
What follows are some notes taken on vmware server. Most are related to an install on ubuntu-server (NO GUI INSTALLED)…. the main point of this is to have the host system take as FEW resources away from the guests as possible.
This requires a few x libraries – but not full blown X gui.
