Slow morning computer news-wise. The only thing that’s really caught my eye is the release by Google of Google Desktop v. 2 In addition to it’s desktop search capabilities it adds rss in a sidebar (news, gmail info, etc.) as well as several other features (Improved outlook filtering). It is version 2 BETA so, you might expect a few bugs. There are also plugins available for the new release.

Peculiar SPAM
I’m getting a new flush of strange junk mails the last day. Most have a subject of either “EIN (Einer!!) Menschenhaendler und Brandstifter laueft frei herum” or a slight variation “EIN Menschenhaendler (und Brandstifter) laueft frei herum” They all claim to be from “WWW daemon apache

Steganography with flickr
This caught my attention for some reason. I guess because steganography is such an unusual word and because the list of uses has been covered so much in the news. I found this article talking about how someone tested to see if there was any kind of filtering on flickr for images containing documents hidden using steganography.

Windows XP on Qemu roundup
So here’s the sumup of my (now working and with plenty of free space) Windows XP install within QEMU. Well, for starters the XP disc I had was an upgrade disc and as I noted before it did not like the media I provided as proof of upgradability. So, I wound up having to go the really long route… The Windows98 SE install would not upgrade to XP for me. Bad install errors that were dealt with by knowledge base articles, but the KB fixes did not solve the problem.

Google adds more languages
Well, of course, you know that Google offers search services in a long list of languages. They can be found at the main Google page by going to the “Language tools” link to the right of the search box. It takes you to this page, which gives you the ability to search pages in a specific language, in a specific country (or combination of the two.)

Running Windows applications under Linux
There are a number of Windows applications that may not have suitable replacements under linux. I know a lot of people that have considered switching, but there was “one program holding them back.” Fortunately there are several options on how to keep that one application from holding you back.

Wine help
No, not red or white. I’m talking Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) , which allows windows applications to run under linux. One of the sites that I’ve found that has some great tips regarding Wine is Franks Corner. For several years this site has been a good resource of “how to” get things to work whether it’s games, office applications or other software.

Zeroday Internet Explorer vulnerability update
The infocon level at incidents.org has been lowered back to green although there is still no patch for this issue from Microsoft and the threat still exists. They like to use the higher level to get attention to an issue, but not leave it on higher alert level for extended periods. They also have noted that Microsoft has updated their advisory.

Zotob update
There was an update at Incidents.org on the Zotob worm and specifically an advisory related to Cisco products.
