Major Bellsouth DNS issues

This morning, I’m noticing some of the machines I monitor having big DNS problems. It seems to be Bellsouth.net’s dns servers gone sideways – none seem to respond. On one network in particular we’re having trouble getting a secondary (outside network) dns server to respond. From outside the bellsouth network things seem fine though. As usual dslreports is a good place to check if others are having the same issue. It appears as though this issue is affecting ALL of bellsouth’s network and has been since at the latest 11:30PM last night (the 16th of October.)

Not too long ago I had several people call or email with notices from bellsouth that the DNS servers would be changing. October 10th was the deadline to make sure that your settings looked like the following…

Note: If you already know how to configure your DNS settings, please

By way of an update – it appears that some of their mailservers are having issues as well. I don’t have the old dns server ip’s to see if they’re having the same problem (or are offline yet.) Those affected may want to use 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as their primary and secondary dns, or the opendns servers * 208.67.222.222
* 208.67.220.220

It looks like a bad day at bellsouth.net – 9 state region affected and they’re still investigating the cause.

–update 10:42 am–

It appears as though things may be back up for bellsouth customers. (as early as 10 am things started coming up.) I’m troubled by a few items though. 1) I talked to someone that CALLED in to bellsouth waited on hold for a fairly long time and finally hung up on the wait music. You would think the LEAST a provider could do is give a recording for the hold line that says “our network is experiencing problems with XYZ currently.” 2) Tហិhe network status page for bellsouth had NO “general system wide” issues, you had to select a state and city to find the posts related to the Mail issue and DNS issue that was affecting ALL areas.

Anyway, as I said, things seem to be coming back up, hopefully it will all come up and stabilize for you bellsouth users.
