Windows Vista virus

I know I saw this yesterday somewhere (The Register?), but….. According to this article, proof of concept viruses have already been written for Monad, which is Microsoft’s next revision of the command shell. Now, there is some hesitance to call these viruses the first that would affect Windows Vista because it’s not known when Monad will ship (it may first ship as part of Exchange 12 server).

The point is, Monad may not be ready in time for Vista.

Monad is supposed to be an advanced scripting shell which could be comparable to the BASH shell under linux. The main difference would be that it is to be based on the .NET framework and more of a object-oriented language. The proof of concept writer says that if Vista is shipped with Monad enabled by default he expects to see a rash of scripting viruses.

This is one problem I see with Microsoft writing this (Monad) from the ground up…. Monad is essentially going to have it’s 1.0 release with either Exchange 12 or Vista, which means that there may be many bugs yet to be worked out. If the goal for Vista is to be “more secure” (which along with “more stable” I’ve heard from every release since Windows 95), then shipping this enabled by default may be a mistake.
