  • Windows XP on Qemu roundup

So here’s the sumup of my (now working and with plenty of free space) Windows XP install within QEMU. Well, for starters the XP disc I had was an upgrade disc and as I noted before it did not like the media I provided as proof of upgradability. So, I wound up having to go the really long route… The Windows98 SE install would not upgrade to XP for me. Bad install errors that were dealt with by knowledge base articles, but the KB fixes did not solve the problem.

  • Vista has network surprises for some beta testers

I saw something about this last week but held off until I could read a bit more. It seems that the Beta version of Windows Vista (the successor to XP) has a feature enabled by default that has caught a few testers by surprise.

  • Worm bits US Customs?

There is a report that a virus shut down the computer systems at US Customs. This made for long slow manual check for travelers entering the U.S. Thursday night is when this took place at a number of airports across the country. They say all has been restored to full capacity.

  • Viral turf war

I remember very well the competing worms that came out in early 2004, Netsky and Bagel (Beagle) and to a degree Mydoom as well. One would try to uninstall the other as they fought for control of a pc. They were done by competing gangs and were literally waging a turf war with home (and business computers.) The same seems to be happening with the latest round of plug ‘n play (worms) viruses (bots).

  • Qemu Windows XP install

Well, I alluded yesterday to a struggle with installing Windows XP under Qemu. Here are some details on the long and (still winding) road. At this point I have a working XP install running under Qemu but, I’ve run out of disk space (2G) and need more space before I can upgrade it to SP2. Note that I have not installed any third party software, just the base OS. Well…. I did have a long way around to get there….

  • Zotob worm bites big media outlets

According to several reports there are several big media outlets seeing what is reported as the zotob worm which exploits a Microsoft Windows vulnerability (MS05-039) disclosed last week. There seems to be no better way for something to make the news than for it to affect the companies that bring us the news…. CNN for one is reporting that the worm has affected their networks as well as ABCnews and the New York Times. The Caterpillar Company is also mentioned.

  • Boot discs

I’ve been using a site the last two days that I thought others might find useful. If you don’t know about it already, it’s bootdisk.com. They have available for download all sorts of Dos, Windows and Linux boot discs.

  • Zotob.b may be affecting some XP SP2/2003 installs

As I noted yesterday, virii typically get updated and improved. Yesterdays reports about the zotob virus noted that Windows Xp service pack 2 and Windows 2003 were not affected by the new worm. Today however, the sans institute is reporting that zotob may be affecting some XP sp2 and 2003 installs. It appears that it uses something called NULL sessions.

  • Free Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows

Barrapunto.com is reporting on a Noticias.com article (on another story by… sorry… got carried away.) Their reporting on a freely available Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows. It should allow full read/write access (although I would quail at allowing Windows to write to ext2 or 3…. just me though.)

  • Raft of Microsoft updates out – time to get updating

The promised batch of windows updates for today are now out and it turns out there were 3 critical updates out of the 6 released. It looks as though the biggy is an RPC problem with the plug and play system (Plug and play needing a remote procedure call?) This is one that could likely be quickly exloited. There is a workaround on this of having port 139 and 445 firewalled (many places do that by default now, last I checked my ISP does.) Don’t take that as a tool for complacence though. Patch it anyway!
