I’m starting this post in part as a placeholder for some information I’ve come across. I’ve been tinkering with my first custom spamassassin rule. I’ve tried the SARE rulesets and they seem to be missing one specific class of junk mail in my setup. (After verifying that the rulesets were actually being used), I set about trying to create my own rule to deal with the offending messages.

The end of antivirus definition updates?
Well, frankly, there has been talk of the end of definition based antivirus scanning for years. You see the achilles heel of any AV scanner is that it has to have signatures of what known viruses look like, so there will always be a reflex window, where there’s a new unknown virus that people are getting infected with before there’s a reaction from the antivirus vendors. The supposed cure for this dillema was hueristic scanning which was supposed to detect things that “looked” like they might be viruses. A noble goal, but along the path it’s proven innefective mostly, either too aggressive and tagging EVERYTHING as potentially viral, or really unnoticable.

Backing up and restoring MySQL databases
In the past few days I’ve been working on an automated backup system for both my site databases and a few others. I thought I’d take a bit to go through what I’ve done. It’s really simple, but I suspect there are some that either don’t realise it’s this simple, or will think this is rocket science. If you are well versed in command-line MySQL interaction you probably already know this….

Other competitors in the UK are already at 8Mbps for their rates. It sounds as though ADSL+2 promises speeds upwards of 24Mbps by the end of the year as well.
