In the last couple days there have been new security releases of both clamantivirus (0.88.2 is now the current) and Mozilla-Firefox (1.0.3 is the current release over there). If you use either of these programs you should be looking to update. I’ve been busy looking at getting src.rpm’s recompiled here for various Mandr-ake/iva’s and if time allows I’ll even upload the latest. It sure feels like firefox has been getting rebuilt about every week or two lately though.

Google Calendar escapes into public use..
There have been rumors for (years?) a long time at least, that google was preparing something known as cl2 which would be a calendar with full gmail integration. There were screenshots, many of which were photoshopped from another web calendar, but there were others that were more convincing… well, as of late yesterday Google Calendar has escaped in to public view. http://www.google.com/calendar. I first tried logging in through my gmail account thinking I might see info there, but I didn’t, so I went to the above link and answered a question about what time zone I’m in, then got to see the main interface.

WordPress trackback problem FINALLY SOLVED….
For around 3-4 months now I’ve had a REALLY annoying problem with the wordpress install on this site. Trackbacks suddenly stopped working. Somewhere around my 800th post or so while the WMF vulnerability was circulating (between Christmas and New Years) and I was typing furiously – poof…. suddenly trackbacks stopped going out. (Incoming trackbacks seemed to work just fine…) What’s had me stumped for so long is that I host 2 (now three) other sites off the same domain and I haven’t had a problem with ANY of those sending pingbacks or trackbacks.

Google Big daddy update….
I’m greatly delayed in writing about this, but Google underwent a huge search engine change. I want to say the switch over occured around February 1st or second. I had been seeing 1000 or so visits a day prior to the change (well to be fair 600-1200 a day…) and after the change now see 60-120 visits a day. Yes, the change was that big. eweek tells us some about it. All in all many say that this is improving search results. (I suspect I’d think so as well if my pages were MORE prominent after the update…)

So many things so little time….
I feel like I’ve done this article so many times in the past…. there are so many things I’m hoping to post and time seems to evaporate before my very eyes. This afternoon I hope to be posting a few things that have been on that list. I also have a few other projects that I’ve been VERY eager to get a start on, which may happen this afternoon (or in whatever’s left of it.) As of late, of course, I’ve been trying to not work through the day, into the evening and late into the night. My pattern of filling all my free time between and after appoinments trying to make posts was quite tiring, maybe I can at some point try to find a balance where I’m not investing toooo much time chasing stories that are already out there.

Strange Desktop issue resolved….
Well, it’s annoying to me when my own computer has issues that I can’t seem to track down and off and on for the last year I’ve had annoying seemingly random shut downs (I mean it’s as if someone pulled the power plug). It was an AMD XP 1800 system. The first I noticed the problem, I was trying to transcode video. A few minutes into the process – bang power off and it would be followed by a painfull 30 seconds of the system trying to post, shutting down, restarting, off, start, off, start with the floppy drive getting a seek every second or two as it seemed to try to muster the power to boot. For this reason, my first suspect was the power supply, 4 drives, hefty processor, hefty video card, (sound card, network, tv card, etc.etc.etc) maybe my generic 300 watt wasn’t steady enough?

Spam Pings
I’ve had a flood of spammy pings on one specific post. I’ve disabled ping backs on that post and will continue to disable pingbacks when I see spammish “abuse” of the concept. I’d certainly rather not do this. One of the values of a pingback is if someone actually writes a RELEVANT article and cites another as reference. If it looks like someone is just attempting to place an add for their services in a comment/pingback, that comment/pingback will be deleted. If that post becomes a nuisance to me to maintain, my solution will be to cut off comments/pingbacks. I suggest if you’re looking at ways to advertise your site, you might look at Google Adwords.

March Microsoft Updates – etc.
I can’t believe it’s been so long without a post – last post was the last MS update cycle. I’ve been trying to avoid spending almost every waking hour at a computer for a while. Anyway, advance notice for the March Microsoft updates came out and it appears as though the only critical update is expected for Office, with an “important” update for Windows. The Office update may require a reboot, the Windows update is not expected to require a reboot.
Hopefully this will make for an un-eventful patch cycle.

Too many things, not enough time
The last few days has been a situation of “too many things to do and not enough time”. I’ve got a growing list of items that I am interested to post in coming days, but things have been busy enough to keep me from it for the most part. It looks like this week (which at the moment seems like just a continuation of last week) will be quite busy as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to start catching up Thursday.

Microsoft was aware of the WMF vulnerability “for years”
Bugtraq has an interesting post which picks up on a note in Stephen Toulouse’s latest entry on the WMF vulnerability. When I first read the post I was more interested in the way he was responding to allegations of the flaw being an intentional backdoor, but the above bugtraq post points out and makes points on an implication that I missed….. (emphasis is mine…)
“The potential danger of this type of metafile record was
recognized and some applications (Internet Explorer, notably)
will not process any metafile record of type META_ESCAPE,
the overall type of the SetAbortProc record.”
