This is the first in a several part series documenting the cleaning of an infected PC. The only real noteworthy item is that it was a dial-up only connection and was rather infested for that. (On par with some of the broadband connected pc’s I’ve seen. It’s also an interesting counterpoint to the network security series.)

Microsoft may pay for search users?
Infoworld has an interesting article this afternoon, that suggests that Microsoft may pay users of their MSN search out of the ad revenue that Microsoft earns from their new adertising service. Speaking of Google, Bill Gates says…
But they don’t share these advertising revenues with the end users who help them get the revenue, Gates said. “Google keeps all of the money with itself,” he added.

Microsoft (MSN) virtual earth becomes Live Local
The Virtual Earth project at MSN will become local.live.com competing with other local search tools from Google and others. There will be some new features. It looks as though one is a 45 degree angle view of most large cities. Directions to a point by just clicking on the map (no address needed). It sounds like there are some interesting features here. Good to see some competition happening in the maps/local search space.

Mobile browsers also eat into Internet Explorer’s market share
Yesterday there were articles and blog posts comparing the next generation of the big three browsers, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. Among the insightful comments on one of those articles, there was the observation that Firefox’s market share of (up to) 15% (more on tech oriented sites), gave webmasters a reason to abandon a one-browser design strategy. In fact, one reason I think all browsers should be standards compliant is to make web designer’s jobs simpler. What’s interesting though is the further point that Mobile web browsing in some parts of the world exceed PC web browsing and there is wide open competition there for browser market share.

Froogle Local price comparisons
I noticed that the googleblog had a note today about some improvements to Froogle that have been rolled out. I have noticed recently that some products were “clustered” with price descriptions of (from $22-$49) or something, which when clicked would show you the exact same item at multiple places (more targeted than just a search for a product name.) The real evolution of it is local…

Yahoo passes Google in search database size
News.com (cnet) is reporting that Yahoo has surpassed Google in sheer numbers of items indexed in their search engine. Currently Yahoo has 20 billion documents and images, Google claims 11.3 billion. I can vouch from watching the logs at this site that the Googlebot has been trailing in visits compared to MSN and Yahoo both.

Google Maps hybrid map seems more complete
A short while back, I compared MSN Virtual Earth and Google Maps, one of the things I noted was that the hybrid feature of MSN’s map was somewhat more complete, however I found a few errors. (The hybrid feature has a satellite image with road names and outlines superimposed over top.) I just noticed that the area I had looked at for comparison has improved on the Google Maps site, there is now more detail available. In fact, it’s complete in comparison to the standard map feature of the site.

Yahoo ! has launched Audio Search
Yahoo! has released an Audio search. It not only allows a search of some of the freely available audio on the net, but according to this article, it searches the catalogs of online music services (such as Rhapsody, emusic, Garageband.com, iTunes.)

Microsoft launches start page test to compete with Google’s start page
When I first saw the MSN search page I had to smirk. It reminded me much of the Google search page. It was a nice “clean” layout, take away the blue background and the similarities would be greater. Of course my first thought was. “OK they’re copying google.” or at least their style. Next

MSN Virtual Earth erases Apple?
Well, since I did the summary of MSN’s new Virtual Earth and compared it to Google Maps. I find this article at The Register that notes that Apple’s Cupertino headquarters is missing from Virtual Earth’s satellite Imagery. They make a bit about how Google Map’s satellite imagery displays it, while MSN doesn’t. (more…)
