Ok, one of the first things that I got annoyed with in the new Mandriva 2006 install on the laptop was the event triggered sounds. Popup notification window one sound, error message – glass breaking, etc. etc…. So, I started trying to remember where to cut all that stuff off. It took a bit of digging to find it, because it’s not in the KDE control panel under “sound” where it might be found in a Windows setup…

Mandriva 2006 review
Madpengiun now has a review up of Mandriva 2006. I’m still hoping soon to have time to sit down and upgrade on at least the laptop. The biggest problem the reviewer had was (slow?) performance under KDE which he suspected could be hardware specific. Overall it sounds like things are VERY well done, it looks like a nice interactive firewall, a la zonealarm is in there which the reviewer was pleased with.

Cheap Linux desktop deployment in Brazil
I found this interesting article over at the KDE dot. Starting next week the Brazilian government is promoting a program to sell relatively cheap computers based on Linux (with KDE as the Desktop Environment.) They are hoping to sell over a half a million machines in the next 4 to 6 months. It looks as though Mandriva may be the base distribution. (24 month low interest loans are one way the idea is being promoted..)

Klax linux livecd with KDE 3.5 Alpha Screenshots
I’ve just seen a slideshow at osdir of screenshots of the Klax KDE 3.5 Alpha livecd. It looks like a pretty good tour, nice screenshots (and the images should be a quicker download than the cd.) It looks very nice (a bit of eyecandy). More flash than I have come to expect from Alpha releases.

Kstars – great personal astronomy software under linux
I’ve played around with Kstars off and on for a good while. It reminds me vaguely of a program I used to have under windows. It’s essentially a planetarium on your desktop. It is GPL licensed and part of the KDE Education suite of programs for the KDE desktop under Linux. It has all the basics for a program of this class (view the night sky and the stars from your latitude and longitude.)

Good linux desktop search
This article at mozillaquest.com gives a highlight of their search for a good linux desktop system. Mandriva (formerly Mandrake) finds itself facing off against Xandros. All in all, some good things are to be said for Mandriva. One of their emphasis is that a good desktop linux distribution is one that works well “out of the box”.
