  • Anonymized Botnet?

    Sans has a story on botnet traffic spotted coming from the TOR network. Now, I had to refresh my memory on what TOR is, but it’s an anonymizing network, essentially a computer running TOR, would collect a list of TOR client machines on the internet and then connections to other pcs are routed through encrypted connections through several different pcs, which masks the origination of the data request. Of course, this doesn’t mean that botnets are actively making use of TOR, it could just be an inadvertant…. “route all my traffic through TOR” computer got a bug….

  • Sophos suggests…. for more safety – get a Mac

    Analyzing the state of the computer world…. Sophos Antivirus has suggested that consumers consider a Mac for their next PC if they’re concerned about the increasing swarm of malware targetting Windows PC’s. The main point being there are no ACTIVE malware threats against Mac systems and Windows still seems to be increasingly targetted. Mac will likely be less malware prone for the foreseeable future. No, MAC users – that is NOT an excuse to ignore Security updates!!!!

  • Camcorder shopping and a reminder of caution

    The last few days I’ve been heavily researching the purchase of a camcorder. I guess I can’t just go out and pick something, I have to research at a number of levels. (Editorial reviews, user reviews, pricing, media, computer compatability, quality, etc. all of these come into play.) So, after several days of researching the product itself I was VERY close to going ahead with one place that had a fantastic price. But then I wondered, how come, this one place had a price that was a clear $100 lower than most anywhere else?

  • Windows Vista Beta notes…

    What follows are some notes that I’ve taken on the Vista beta that I installed into a VM. I’ve got a lot of toying around yet to do with it (and at least one Internet Explorer bug I want to mention.) But… I’ll go ahead and post this. [warning – rambling and long text…]

    A few days back I undertook an effort of self torture. After finally getting the Vista Beta 2 downloaded and having Vmware server up and running I thought I’d give a go at installing and see what things looked like. I did NO pre-googling for tips and so this is a pure “discover as you go” process.

    According to reuters data on US Nuclear Safety Administration employees (*some 1500) was stolen in a computer cracking incident.

  • Pretty, shiny usb drive is all it takes to compromise security….

    Sometimes you just want to cry… This writeup is an example of the “soft underbelly” of every network’s security plan… the users. Basically, you have a group that was hired to do a computer security audit of a credit union. They were told that some of the main concerns were social engineering (easy sharing of passwords among/from employees) and they were concerned about removable usb drives being used to copy data out of the credit union. So, they hatched an idea to try and make use of what they’d learned were the concerns. They prepared 20 usb keys with pictures and some “specially designed software” and scattered them in places where employees would find them… smoking areas, parking lot, etc.

  • 2,000 year old computer?

    The Register had an interesting article on the analysis of what may get classified as the worlds oldest computer (2000 years old – Greek.) Apparently it’s been known for a while (discovered in an old shipwreck around 1900). It’s been called the “Antikythera Mechanism” and has more than 30 dials and wheels. Anyway, it’s currently been undergoing detailed imaging analysis which has uncovered some new clues which may reinforce a theory that it was designed to track/predict planetary locations (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were known to the ancient Greeks.)

  • Remote tech support with anything – would I do it?

    I’ve tried to ask myself if I’d trust someone enough to let them run a remote session on my own desktop to solve a problem. I think the answer is “it depends”. If you think about it, I do tech support for home users quite a bit and they let me come into their homes. If I were weighing someone coming into my house, or onto my computer desktop, I think I’d choose my desktop. …

  • Wiping data from hard drives

    How often do I get to talk about this? Yahoo News has an article on a couple who, a year ago, took their PC to Best Buy to have the hard drive swapped. Best Buy assured them that the drive would be destroyed…. Recently they got a call from a guy in Chicago that had bought a hard drive at a flea market. It had their data on it and he wondered if they wanted it or if he should wipe the data. OK – there’s this really good utility Dariks Boot and Nuke (DBAN) that can thoroughly wipe a hard drive. I know the couple in this article had taken their drive to someone else, but….
