  • Broadband speeds keep going up

Zdnet is reporting that a British broadband company, NTL is upping their Cable internet speed rto 10Mbps at no charge by the end of the year. Other competitors in the UK are already at 8Mbps for their rates. It sounds as though ADSL+2 promises speeds upwards of 24Mbps by the end of the year as well.

  • Planning for disaster recovery

This covers all operating systems really. What would happen if your hard drive crashed right now? What data would you lose? What about if the server room flooded? What if your mission critical system went down. What data would you lose and how long would it take to be back up and running?

  • Server Outage

There is one domain that I host which are on a server that has had some major “issues”, backups are in the process of being reloaded and the current estimate is that they will be back up in about two and a half hours. It appears as though there were some data corruption problems, possibly with the first attempt to restore from backup. It appears that the backup restored will be from midnight the night before the outage.

  • Using a linux livecd for Data recovery

This one makes into the hardware AND software categories. I don’t remember how many times I’ve replaced a failing hard drive. Usually the biggest headache and anxiety is if you’ll be able to get any data off of the old drive. Sometimes if luck holds and the system can read both the old and the new drives, you can easily. You can just copy data from the old drive to the new one. But sometimes you’re not as lucky, the drive starts to have reading errors and things go from bad to worse.

  • Protecting your computer hardware from Lightning

I think it was last night on the local news, they led with a story about a local family that, during a recent thunderstorm heard/saw a very close lightning hit. They had some nice film footage of a tree that had its bark completely blown away and a nice rip down the side of the tree. (My guess is the lightning hit flash heated ( vaporized) the sap or water inside the tree and the pressure of that is what blew bark around. I don’t know though.) The report talked about how North Carolina is high on the list of states with regards to lightning strikes (more…)
