So, juice (formerly known as ipodder) was a bit too gui-only for my tastes, I took a look at bashpodder which is a bash-script based podcast client. Really, this is very much to my liking as it can be scripted to run via cron (or at)… basically, there are three required files from the main site. There is a gui for it, but that’s not necessary…. bashpodder.shell, parse_enclosure.xsl, and bp.conf are required. bp.conf is the main configuration file and you basically enter one feed address per line.

I’ve been playing around a bit with podcast clients the last couple of days. I’ve been finding online news feeds for the onlineradiotv.com site and for many of those I have bash scripts to handle downloading or streaming the audio available from shortwave broadcasters. I did run across a few podcasts too though and thought it might be time to take another look at linux podcasting clients…

Running kontact components standalone
Not long ago, I switched from Evolution to Kontact as my primary mail/calendar/addressbook/etc…. program under linux. One of the nice things about the Kontact suite is that you can either open up the “umbrella” application kontact or, the individual applications. I like the fact that they can still be used standalone. So, I was a bit frustrated to find every link for each of the components to bring up the “umbrella” kontact application, instead of the standalone….

Mozilla Firefox 1.5 for Mandriva 2006
Mandriva 2006 released without Mozilla Firefox 1.5, it came with 1.0.6 (which included security fixes and other patches from 1.0.7)…. anyway, source rpm’s for Firefox 1.5 became available in cooker, so I’ve built rpm’s for Mandriva 2006 for easy management on my systems. I’ll post links here as they may be of use to others as well. …. These are provided as is, with no warranty express or implied, etc. etc. etc. The src.rpm is straight from cooker, so, if you like, you could build it yourself….

Clamav 0.88 for Mandrake 10.0
I’ve got a couple of older Mandrake 10.0 servers that I’m still maintaining. They’re systems that it hasn’t been practical (yet) to do an upgrade to a more recent release of the base operating system. Two of those are currenlty using Clamantivirus for their mailscanning. So, with the recent security vulnerability an update was needed. I basically took the clamav 0.88 source rpm from cooker and rebuilt on a 10.0 system. For convenience I’m posting ALL of these for download. So…. I’ll post the original src rpm from Mandriva cooker. (Which you could make use of to rebuild for another release of Mandrake.) And also the resulting built rpm’s….

Codeweavers fixes WMF vulnerability in Crossover Office
There has been a bugfix release to Crossover Office, released by Codeweavers. Crossover Office is an offshoot of the Wine project, which is a windows compatibility suite for Linux, to allow Windows applications to run under modern Linux operating systems. It was found recently that wine suffered from the WMF vulnerability just the same as Windows. The new release is 5.0.1, notes on what has changed can be found here.

Clamav vulnerability
There’s a security fix available for a vulnerability in Clamantivirus. Version 0.88 fixes the vulnerability which could allow a remote attacker to control a machine running clamantivirus. The Security Fix has coverage on this, and the update can be found at the clamav site. This affects ClamWin as well, available here

Kubuntu Review and Ubuntu Review
There’s a good review up of both Kubuntu and Ubuntu over at Desktoplinux.com. The writer doesn’t seem to find either a perfect fit. Ubuntu is Gnome based, Kubuntu is KDE based. The versions reviewed are 5.10
Ultimately the writer suggests Suse Linux 10.0 or Xandros as a desktop workstation, Mepislite or SimplyMepis for a new user and OpenSuse for a server-based linux OS.

Flightgear scenery objects
So, I’ve spent a bit of time talking about flightgear. Here are a couple extra resources that I want to “bookmark” here. There is a Good unofficial how-to here. (Mostly linux flightgear oriented. Also, the flightgear scenery is available here. The link is to a grid covered world map. Clicking on a grid quadrant downloads scenery for that quadrant.

Linux Livecd Download
This should probably go in the Windows tech support category too… but, as I’ve talked about before I’ve spent a good amount of time using different linux livecd’s. I’ve even made a few livecd’s of my own with Mandrake (now mandriva) linux, using the mklivecd scripts. One of the nice things about a livecd is that it’s self contained, portable and relatively secure (any compromise should be able ot be undone by rebooting.) There are linux livecds customized for just about every conceivable use. The ones I did varied from booting to an image slideshow to a full cooker based desktop.
