Okay, in an earlier article I was looking at uses of Google that might reveal things you don’t want revealed about your website. Maybe a test directory that you don’t want to be spidered. I want to say that it’s not possible to keep it hidden just by NOT linking to it. That’s what some will suggest, the argument goes along these lines “spiders just follow links, so don’t link to a directory or document you don’t want the web spiders to see.” Spidering bots seem to be a bit more resourceful though, I’ve seen files and folders that I can’t imagine were linked to being picked up in a web search, so how do we prevent that? Migrating Web Applications from Explorer to Mozilla
One of my pet peeves is web sites that work with only one web browser. (Usually Internet Explorer) and break, sometimes badly with anything else. Recently I ran into this problem at a registrar. When I tried changing DNS data things did not work under Firefox and I had to visit the page with Explorer. IBM’s developer works site has (more…)

Anti phishing information (phighting phishing ?)
Well, after the early week experience with getting a Bank of the West site taken down, I’ve taken on two more which have come in today. One of these was an ebay spoof, the other paypal. In both cases I’ve emailed the appropriate abuse address on the owners network (this time one is in China, I think the second was as well.) I did find out something neat about paypal and ebays ways of reporting. (more…)

Preview of KDE 3.5
I just saw a good review of KDE 3.5 Currently KDE 3.4.1 is the stable release and so 3.5 is what is currently in development. It looks like quite a few nice user interface polish has been worked on. This make me eager to try it out. (more…)

The check’s in the mail
Of course, there was a time when delivery of many things relied heavily on the US Postal Service and the blame of a delay could be passed along. I saw an article lately about people using technology to do tricks like that, turning back the clock on their computer before answering emails, getting sounds for their cells phones that sound like passing traffic, or a subway, etc. This strikes me as pretty silly. But there are some legitimate reasons, especially when posting to a web page when you might want to go ahead and type something and have it show up at another time, or as having come out earlier. Phish down – finally
Finally, I just checked and ~80 hours since my first emails the Bank of the West phishing site is finally down. (~32 hours since contacting the ISP and 8-10 hours since contacting Bank of the West.) I suspect the ISP probably is the one responsible as I’ve found 24-48 hour response time for ISP’s with virus complaints. (Note to self, first round of complaints should probably go to ALL contacts that might be directly responsible, domain owners, ISP and even spoofed company.) I hate that it took so long, but I’m glad that it’s down. I feel like I actually have accomplished something with all the time I’ve spent on it this week. (more…)

Phishing – Bank of the West Notice part three… (deeper sigh)
You’ll notice I haven’t mentioned the URL of the phishing site thus far. That is, in part, because I feel as though it would be irresponsible. That someone might come across this and take advantage of the fact that the site is still up and running to harvest account information. I would like to think that wouldn’t happen, but hey, that’s why the site is there to begin with. Well, 72 hours and still no action. (more…)

Creating a redirect page
This is one that comes in handy a lot. Like many things in computing there are a number of ways to accomplish this. My favorite though is one fo the simplest. (more…)

Phishing – Bank of the West Notice take two… (deeper sigh)
Well, I’m trying. The first post I did on the Bank of the West phishing email I was somewhat down because there are people in the world that do phishing scams. Now I’m down because the company that has the site on it’s servers has not responded and around 48 hours after initially reporting it to them, it is still there. Unfortunately it looks like a LARGE number of people have given account information. Again, I can’t be certain, but it appears that way. (more…)

How do I find my IP address
This is one that can be handy from time to time, trying to find your ip address. If you’re on a lan there aren’t too many ways to find your public ip within the operating systems software. However, under Windows if you go to, Start, Run and then type cmd and press enter you’ll get a command prompt from which you can type ipconfig and see the ip address for each network interface. One (more…)
