  • Mars Ice lake?

I don’t know how I ran across this link, but it’s interesting and has a GREAT photo. The picture is supposedly of an Ice Lake on Mars Beautiful coloration, I’m not sure if it’s false color or what. Obviously this has little to do with computers other than how the image was captured and transmitted, but it’s neat nonetheless. (more…)

  • There aren’t THAT many phish in the sea, more on phighting phishing

The last post, I got sidetracked into another idea as I was doing a google search. Not uncommon. OK, what I was curious about is how many phishing sites are estimated to be “in the wild” at any given moment threatening to defraud viewers? Well, my search did turn up an interesting report. (more…)

  • More phishing phighting

I mentioned that I had gone after another two phishing sites the other day. One was down within 24 hours. I was impressed with the responsiveness, but it’s possible I wasn’t the first to complain. Still it was good to see it gone. I’m still working on the second. It’s hosted at an xo.com ip address. Along the lines of the phishing battle, (more…)

  • Internet Explorer 7 beta

I just read a review over at techreviewcentral of the recent beta release of Internet Explorer 7. Now, I’ll go ahead and say this. I’m not a Microsoft fan. I use Linux for my desktop operating system for a number of reasons. That said, (more…)

  • Custom Error Pages with .htaccess

Ok, we’ve looked at controlling access to directories with .htaccess, but there are other neat tricks we can do that can add a bit of polish to your site. (more…)

  • Protecting access to web directories with htaccess

Okay, in an earlier article I was looking at uses of Google that might reveal things you don’t want revealed about your website. Maybe a test directory that you don’t want to be spidered. I want to say that it’s not possible to keep it hidden just by NOT linking to it. That’s what some will suggest, the argument goes along these lines “spiders just follow links, so don’t link to a directory or document you don’t want the web spiders to see.” Spidering bots seem to be a bit more resourceful though, I’ve seen files and folders that I can’t imagine were linked to being picked up in a web search, so how do we prevent that? (more…)

  • Migrating Web Applications from Explorer to Mozilla

One of my pet peeves is web sites that work with only one web browser. (Usually Internet Explorer) and break, sometimes badly with anything else. Recently I ran into this problem at a registrar. When I tried changing DNS data things did not work under Firefox and I had to visit the page with Explorer. IBM’s developer works site has (more…)

  • Anti phishing information (phighting phishing ?)

Well, after the early week experience with getting a Bank of the West site taken down, I’ve taken on two more which have come in today. One of these was an ebay spoof, the other paypal. In both cases I’ve emailed the appropriate abuse address on the owners network (this time one is in China, I think the second was as well.) I did find out something neat about paypal and ebays ways of reporting. (more…)

  • Preview of KDE 3.5

I just saw a good review of KDE 3.5 Currently KDE 3.4.1 is the stable release and so 3.5 is what is currently in development. It looks like quite a few nice user interface polish has been worked on. This make me eager to try it out. (more…)

  • The check’s in the mail

Of course, there was a time when delivery of many things relied heavily on the US Postal Service and the blame of a delay could be passed along. I saw an article lately about people using technology to do tricks like that, turning back the clock on their computer before answering emails, getting sounds for their cells phones that sound like passing traffic, or a subway, etc. This strikes me as pretty silly. But there are some legitimate reasons, especially when posting to a web page when you might want to go ahead and type something and have it show up at another time, or as having come out earlier.
