Microsoft fixes security fix….

Well, for the second month in a row (I don’t recall one in March..) Microsoft has re-released a patch for Windows. This time it’s the Flash patch (which really falls under 3rd party software). They’ve re-worked the version detection of the update in an attempt to solve all the problems that people have run into with this update. The MS Security blog information is here.

Thanks to The PC Doctor for the sharp eyes on the news…. He hopes (as do we all…) that this solves the problems AND that Microsoft takes more care with updates.

I would add…. if an update hasn’t been tested, make a specific update channel for it to get wider public testing so we can go into it with “eyes wide open..” I’m afraid, given the experience that I saw last month with the Windows Explorer update that some people may be less inclined to let automatic updates download and install on their own if they cause these kinds of annoyances.

Last month’s Windows Explorer update caused much greater problems from what I saw, but given how widespread the HP software is, I have a hard time understanding how that managed to miss showing up in testing. I really think my preference would be the automatic update channel for updates that have been tested thoroughly that automatically downloads and installs and the “testing” updates that can be chosen by people with the understanding that it may not be thoroughly bug free and feedback for any problems would be closely monitored. If we keep getting “half ready” updates in the automatic update stream I think there will be many that will shy away from them. It’s VITAL that not happen.
