The D-Link DWL-800AP+ as a wireless repeater to extend wireless range – Part 5

So, I set a WEP key on the linksys (WAP11 v. 1.1) and it promptly disappeared… it stopped responding (over the WIRED network) to my wap11gui admin tool. I quickly realized that part of the problem is from having two network cards attached (both in the 192.168.0 range)… disconnect the usb card and reconnect. Then I use the “security” tab to enable WEP (128-bit)

Use a passphrase to generate the keys…. and select a key to use… Next I copy the keys to a plain text document (to make life simpler) and save that away on my main desktop. Next, I reconnect the d-link DWL-800AP+ to make the changes there. From the Wireless tab, I select to enable WEP and copy in the key from the linksys.

At this point, I reset the device and turn to the pocket pc. Networking is now broken (so I’ve succeeded in securing it…) I copy in the WEP key. Nothing, I’ve now tried several variations and am not having luck at this point. It looks as though the pocket pc should support 128-bit wep (it has an option for it.) But things don’t seem to be working. I see the Linksys access point listed, but not the d-link and I’m not on the network, it just sees the access point as available. The next step will be to pull out the laptop. More to come…
