The 2nd journey begins… Mandriva 2006 upgrade 2 – Part 7

Ok – Nvidia driver was an easy one, download the latest from nvidia.com stop the X server, run sh NIVIDIAlongfilename.run, hit enter a few times, wait and eventually…. restart the X server log in and glx hardware accelerated goodness awaits…. Really and truly that was simple (a lot simpler than what I had tried with the urpme/urpmi of the nvidia rpms.) I should have just done that when the urpmi didn’t seem to have things working.

I suspect if I’d done a pure format/install running from a dvd install disc (instead of using a boot cd to pull from the online sources.) That part should have gone smoother (in fact I’d hope using the powerpack cd/dvd locally it would have gone smoother upgrade or fresh install.)

Kqemu was (as I thought) an easy one, I still had the source rpm from before and just uninstalled the dkms-kqemu that had been made last time around and… rpm –rebuild kqemu_longfilename.src.rpm and install the fresh one.

So, we’re down to tvcard (which as I recall from the original setup was tough as it’s not detected properly.) Admittedly I got an old used one cheap and have thought several times of upgrading it to a new one with built in mpeg encoder. (Maybe I’ll do that yet…) The only other thing that bugs me is the “launch new session” shortcut is now missing. I’ve got “switch user” but it only gives the choice of currently logged in sessions. (So, I’d have to switch to a console, login, then back to X in order to see that as a choice to switch to.) I suspect something has changed in how it’s configured to show that. It should be easy (just a google away?)

re:kubuntu /ubuntu… I’m currently installing it into a qemu image to give a try at getting used to it. There are a lot of things I’m curious about (not the least of which is the sudo / vs. root login concept.) I’m also curious to see what configuration tools they have. I may just be recommending that as a good “new user” distro.
