More phishing phighting

I mentioned that I had gone after another two phishing sites the other day. One was down within 24 hours. I was impressed with the responsiveness, but it’s possible I wasn’t the first to complain. Still it was good to see it gone. I’m still working on the second. It’s hosted at an xo.com ip address. Along the lines of the phishing battle, it had me thinking about a number of things. One thing that turned up in a search was an article at C-Net’s news blog about a posting at netcraft regarding hackers defacing phishing sites. Now it does sound tempting to hack the fraudsters, my main concern is that you’re essentially breaking into someone elses machine to do this. (Breaking into someone elses home to stop a robbery might be an analogy…?) The biggest issue I see is the possibility of becoming implicated and having a hard time proving your innocence. Interesting topic though.

Got a bit sidetracked though on that idea and will have to save the idea I had for the next post.
