I don’t know, it seems excessively wine-y to gripe about an operating system that isn’t released yet, but I’ve seen people do that about linux quite a bit…. (why doesn’t xyz work in beta 1 of _____ distribution….) It’s a beta, there will be many things that aren’t likable, report it where they’re looking for feedback… That much said, there was an article out at Computer world detailing the 20 things you’ll dislike with Vista. Of course, given that it’s a beta things will likely change (yeah – there’ll be 30 things you don’t like by the full release…. sorry had to be said.) Seriously, hopefully Microsoft is listening to this feedback. I’ve heard that they are aware they need to make the UAP less “in your face all the time…”

Firefox 1.5.0.3 RPMS for Mandriva 2006
I’m in the process of uploading an update to the mozilla firefox 1.5 rpms for Mandriva 2006 that I have posted previously on the site. They should be browsable at http://www.averyjparker.com/wp-content/downloads/firefox/. In that directory you’ll see the source rpm I built from, then a subdirectory for firefox-1.5.0.3 with the main rpms and a subdirectory of THAT with the devel rpms.

Running Google Earth under Wine on linux
A while back I talked about Google Earth under Codeweavers wine almost working (or at least I think I mentioned it here, I KNOW I tried it…) Well, I tried with vanilla wine as well and couldn’t get it to work, BUT… I’ve just finished a successful run of it. Codeweavers fixes WMF vulnerability in Crossover Office
There has been a bugfix release to Crossover Office, released by Codeweavers. Crossover Office is an offshoot of the Wine project, which is a windows compatibility suite for Linux, to allow Windows applications to run under modern Linux operating systems. It was found recently that wine suffered from the WMF vulnerability just the same as Windows. The new release is 5.0.1, notes on what has changed can be found here.

X-Plane flight Simulator for Linux
I remember back when I was running Windows as my primary OS, one of my favorite diversions was Microsoft Flight Simulator (2000?) In fact, I clearly remember circumnavigating the globe in a Cessna in that program (landing at a small strip in Icelend, the old Hong Kong International airport and some airstrip in the Himalayas were the most challenging. In fact, for the altitude problems I didn’t think I’d make it past the himalayas…) Anyway, when I moved to linux it wouldn’t run under wine and there wasn’t much out there to compare that ran under linux.

The 2nd journey begins… Mandriva 2006 upgrade 2 – Part 6
OK – there may be those that read the last entry and had some obvious “oh, you ought to look in the ***** directory for menu information.” On the issue I ran into with missing menu items after the upgrade. (And even after moving my .kde folder to .kdeold and logging back in.) OK – it’s been a while since I’ve taken a long hard look at HOW menu’s are built in Mandrake (Mandriva)….

Nero for Linux
The news is that Nero has announced NeroLinux a version of their cd burning software that will run under the linux operating system. The software is available in either rpm or deb binary (for either debian based or red-hat based package managed systems.) I’ve noticed that Nero install under wine with no real problems. I’ve never tried to use it for cd burning under wine as I’ve preferred either (command line) cdrecord/growisofs or (gui) k3b for cd burning.

One alternative to Google Book (formerly Google Print)
Search Engine watch has reported on a less controversial alternative to the Google Book Search (formerly Google Print). Less controversial, of course from the standpoint of Book publishers and those with concerns about Google’s potential for their size and leverage.

Running UltraVNC viewer under wine
I talked in the last entry about using UltraVNC and UltraVNC Single Click (ultravnc sc) as a means of doing remote desktop support. The idea is that you (the technical support person), setup vncviewer to listen for connections, then the end user with pc problems can download your customized ultravnc server that will connect to your viewer through firewalls/etc. This has a lot of things going for it. 1) ease of use by the end user 2) only one network to make firewall configuration changes on, 3) small quick download. The biggest downside I see is that the ultravnc viewer doesn’t run on linux.

Old Play by mail (email) games…
Ok – not work related, but… I was remembering with one of my brother’s a computer game we played maybe 10 years ago that was a strategy game and had a neat play by email feature. The game was turn based, we’d make a move and it had a handy link to email the game info to each other and I think we went back and forth with it for several weeks. It was really quite an entertaining way to deal with the game. Now, today, with realtime strategy games, online multiplayer communities, etc. play by email seems a bit dated, but for many turn based games this would be one feature I’d LOVE to see more of.
