  • Facebook Fan Check Application Virus

Just as last week, the facebook fan check application virus rumor is making the rounds again. And also just as last week people searching for information on the facebook fan check virus are running into some of the top search results hosting malware. There were several attack sites up last week when I saw this search in heavy duty hot trend mode and it likely is the same this week.

A word of caution – if you visit a web page that promptly pops up a full screen drawing of my computer or the like and claims to be running a scan on your computer it is probably faked.

  • Windows Police Pro

Yes folks, it’s Windows Police Pro, the gift that keeps on giving apparently. It’s crawled back into Googles top searches tonight. If you want to see how to remove it look at Windows Police Pro Removal, you may be interested in Who is behind Windows Police Pro and probably will need to visit the virus tool removal list. The worst trick this virus plays….

  • js/exploit packed.c.gen

I see users of McAfee are seeing a lot of complaints by their antivirus about this js/exploit packed.c.gen. One user is reporting that the weather underground site is raising a flag about this virus. I’m seeing indications that this may be a false positive.

  • So who is behind Windows Police Pro Virus / Rogue Security Software?

As I’ve seen the continuing FLOOD of searches for some way to Remove Windows Police Pro, I’ve been starting to wonder at the who is behind this particular piece of junk software. These programs aren’t written by your average ordinary virus writer, there is really too much spit and polish on these and the end result is a racket which resembles a mob shakedown along the lines of “it’d be shame if anything happened to your important data”….. I’m intrigued by some that are speculating that there’s a connection to the Total Security 2009 package. The reason they’re saying that is some of the top sites for removal of Windows Police Pro are actually shilling ANOTHER rogue security program Total Security 2009. If that isn’t moving from the frying pan to the fire. They also suggest a connection with the XP Police Antivirus (which was yet ANOTHER of these wolves in sheeps clothing.)

  • Antivirus Removal Tool List Update

Just a quick note that I’ve updated the Antivirus Removal Tool list to include VIRUS removal tools. (I originally intended the list to be those utilities to clean up a system so that it could deal with a fresh install of an antivirus product. (Can’t count how many times I’ve had to use Norton’s tool.)) Anyway, it’s such a popular page, I thought it would be a bit more complete to add links to the antivirus vendors free tools for removing viruses/virii.

  • Huge Spam Operation Shut Down Thanks to TheSecurityFix

Thank you Brian Krebs of the Security Fix. He has just made the internet a little better place. He’s worked for several months investigating a group that is believed to have been hosting provider for up to 75% of the Internet’s junk email as well as child porn websites, rogue anti-virus software and who knows what other slime. Great work Brian. He essentially contacted the service providers of the group in question and presented them with the evidence that he and others uncovered.

  • The latest and greatest in Malware Removals

I have started referring to malware more and more lately because the term virus doesn’t exactly describe the pests I see on peoples machines and the terms spyware or adware aren’t doing justice to some of these pests either. (There are many pieces of what I would consider malware that do undesired things that protest vehemently (and technically correct) that they are not spyware.) So, the last week I’ve had my hands full with a machine on the bench that had a bug in it that was like a multi-headed hydra. It’s kind of like Night of the Living dead or one of those Friday the 13th movies… every time you think you’ve got the baddies licked they keep coming back. Hang on this could be a long post….

  • Virus Warning – Email Subjects – IRS Notice – Important Information from the IRS

I’ve seen a couple of these emails today and wanted to give a post just to warn people that these are bogus and you should NOT follow the link suggested in the email. I HOPE no one reading this falls for it, but the “tax software update” that they are pushing is a virus. (SHOCK!) Only a little over half the antivirus vendors currently detect it.

  • HP Vista CLFS.SYS error

I’ve had a fun time this week dealing with a STRANGE Vista problem on an HP computer (I doubt it’s HP specific, but don’t know for certain.) The error goes like this… “A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.” “CLFS.sys” “Page_Fault_in_nonpaged_area” “If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen….” And the stop error code looks like this “stop 0x00000050” The real problem is everything tried leads to the same place.

  • Major botnet building and the massive jump in spam

For a few months now (since the demise of bluefrog actually) I’ve noticed that the level of junk mail has gone up on my own mail server. Yes, I use spamassassin to filter and tag, but the volume of stuff that’s tagged has gone up (as well as the volume that slips through.) I’ve had to flush out the bayes filter more than I would like after some massive bayes poisoning attempts (those messages with lots of random words or text.) I’ve also been following news on the topic and thought I’d detail some of it here for those that haven’t been paying attention.
