After I did my “Kiosk” upgrade to KDE 3.5.2 I was really interested to see if Konqueror would finally work with Google Maps, of course, the problem isn’t with Konqueror it’s with the browser detection. Konqueror uses something called khtml to render web pages. It’s really a fairly good/standards compliant ACID test passing engine. So much so that Apple thought they would base Safari on it. The problem is that some websites recognize “Safari” in the User agent and say, “sorry, we don’t support you” if the browser user agent claims Konqueror….

Interesting spyware push download tactic…
Incidents.org has another interesting post about a spyware site. One of the handlers ran across it while doing a search for an educational institution. (They’ve used a wildcard in the dns record so that they can get traffic to {fillinkeyword}.nastydomain.com) Anyway… the main page tries to install WinAntiSpyware2006FreeInstall.cab from WinSoftware Corporation, Inc. It gives the little ActiveX control popdown bar and insists that it must be installed to view the page properly. But that’s not the most interesting part…

Browser Statistics reaction
OK – someone has a sense of humor. In the hour after the browser statistics article where I said that on this site, Internet Explorer was being used by less than 50% of the viewers I saw an interesting thing happen. In the span of 2 minutes, 1 single IP address pulled EVERY link on the site, claiming to be browsing with IE 5.5 for a total of about 450 hits. Initially I thought, OK it’s either a search crawler masquerading as IE in the “User Agent” field, or somebody wanted to play with my stats. (more…)
