It’s about that time again folks…. Monthly Microsoft patch cycle – June patches will be released on the 13th (next Tuesday) and it looks like a big batch. There should be 12 patches this time and at least one of the Windows updates is Critical and at least one of the Office updates is critical. It’s widely expected that an update will be released for the Word vulnerability that’s been talked about previously here. Also, there will be a change in the ActiveX behavior in Internet Explorer. That change had been scheduled to come out a few months back, but was postponed.

Microsoft April Updates coming Tuesday
To change the Google theme of the afternoon…. Microsoft is due to release their April updates this coming Tuesday (April 11th.) Advance bulletin is here. Four updates affecting Windows, one affecting Office AND Windows. Highest severity is Critical (Explorer flaw probably) Reboot will be required… The Office/Windows update MAY require a reboot and is listed as Moderate.

Microsoft February Patch day advance notice
Microsoft has given advance notice that next Tuesday they will be releasing 7 updates for Windows, as many as 5 of these will be tagged as critical. The Security Fix has a bit on the advance notice as does Sans. Looks like one of the critical updates will be for Media Player, 4 for Windows itself and 2 updates for Microsoft Office. A reboot will be required for some of the updates.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday January
Sounds like this patch Tuesday will have a couple of updates in spite of the early release of the WMF vulnerability fix. Thanks to Microsoft for yielding that fix as soon as the testing was done. I would hope that it wasn’t just public pressure, but a sense of what the right thing to do is when there are exploits actively targeting a vulnerability.

Too little time…
I’ve just been back at appointments what – 2 days? And already I’ve got a ton of issues to detail. I usually don’t get into details of everything I run into because many times it’s rather tedious issues, memory install, fill in the blank virus removal for the nth time, etc. However I’ve already run across a few unique things that have taken some searching. One is still unresolved (time constraint.) That will get a revisit in the near future.

Microsoft advisory on Sober “Awakening”
Microsoft has posted a security advisory (912920) on the previously reported “awakening” of the Sober worm, expected January 6th.
Systems that are infected with Win32/Sober.Z@mm may download and run malicious files from certain Web domains beginning on January 6, 2006

Spyaxe Spytrooper spysherriff et al removal
There are so many “wolves in sheeps clothing” or maybe I should say wolves in sheepdogs clothing… Anyway, so many nasty malware’s that pose as protective utilities. Spyaxe, spytrooper, spy sherriff, etc. There is a tool that is specialized towards removing these. Smitrem which is short for smitfraud removal. (After the viral name of one of the first of this class of rogue.)

What’s fascinating about this category is most of these products either use security vulnerabilities to get into a system, or merely convince a person browsing the web that they’re the right tool for the job. Two critical fixes from Microsoft on December patch Tuesday
December’s rendition of Microsoft’s monthly Patch Tuesday will feature two critical security fixes. The malicious software removal tool will also be updated…
Additionally, Microsoft will issue two non-security high-priority updates through Windows Update and Software Update Services, and three non-security high-priority updates through Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services. It is standard Microsoft procedure to not disclose the nature of the updates beforehand for security reasons.
