I’ve been struggling off and on with an issue on my Dad’s computer the last month or so. He said that it would occasionally just shut off completely out of the blue. (He also admonished me not to spend much time on it. Unfortunately problems like this are usually the ones that take the most time to solve because they seem random and it’s hard to pin down the cause.) He runs Windows XP primarily (although we have an ubuntu install setup as a dual boot choice.) In the last year the power supply and video card have been replaced for similar behavior. Although it’s been several months since the replacement with little “misbehaving” since. One of the things I did was run a memory test, which came out fine.

More XBox 360 news
Again I haven’t been big into console gaming, but here’s a bit more XBox 360 news that I’ve run across. First up, is the Free60 project, whose aim is to port linux and darwin to the new XBOX 360 hardware platform. It’ll be interesting to see if this can be done without hardware modification…
The story I had the other day talked about the problems quite a few of hte new XBOX 360 owners were running into with frequent crashes.

Shuttle astronaut pulls gap filler out in spacewalk
I waited until I could find a news article with a pretty picture, this wasn’t quite what I was hoping for, as this space walk should have allowed for some excellent views of the shuttle and the earth behind it. The astronaut successfully pulled out the “gap fillers” that were protruding from the underbelly. There was concern that the friction caused by these on re-entry would cause overheating.
