I’m writing this from the laptop. Having run Mandriva 2006 without any real significant bumps for a couple weeks I’ve come to a point where I’m ready to take the plunge on the desktop. The desktop is my primary workstation. The laptop get’s occasional light use and is the one I’m more likely to play with when it comes to possibly losing configuration information or scripts (because I’ve got things copied to the desktop and server.)

Great space picture of the Crab nebula
Off topic – Space pictures have always held a special fascination for me and today when I ran across this one I couldn’t resist mentioning it. Maybe it’s all the space-related movies growing up, or just the amazing mix and blend of colors on a black background that the composite images give us.

200GB optical storage not enough – try 300GB
InPhase Technologies (lucent spinoff) is readying an optical storage drive that can hold 300GB per disc. It’s expected to read and write 10 times faster than current DVD drives and uses “Tapestry holographic memory technology”. The discs are expected to be a bit thicker than DVD’s and about 13cm (~5.11 inches)

10 Million Candlepower Spotlight
I have no idea where to put this. It isn’t exactly high tech…. Anyway, we live out in a rural (becoming suburban…) area which means good lighting is very useful. We have a good outdoor houselight, but have never wanted an always on area light. Flashlights are good, but even the biggest mag-lights seem ineffective against the depths of the dark nights around here.

With impeccable timing…. Desktop Linux is reporting that Resolvo systems has released their “MoveOver Enterprise” desktop migration tool to assist migrating from Windows to Linux in the Enterprise.

In the spirit of a fair look at Mozilla Firefox (after doing a bit of a roasting of IE’s security), I’ve taken a look at Secunia’s analysis of Firefox. Currently there are 3 unpatched vulnerabilities on Firefox.
