In the spirit of a fair look at Mozilla Firefox (after doing a bit of a roasting of IE’s security), I’ve taken a look at Secunia’s analysis of Firefox. Currently there are 3 unpatched vulnerabilities on Firefox.

IE too dangerous to use?
In all fairness this is a year old news release from US-CERT. Beware of IE, certainly there have been patches for IE since this release (3 this week.) But have all of the issues they raise been dealt with? According to Secunia there are still 20 advisories related to Internet Explorer that are unpatched.

Boycott Microsoft’s IE 7.0 ?
There’s an editorial at Windows IT pro that’s trying to hold Microsoft’s feet to the fire with the upcoming browser release. Disappointed by yesterdays posting that IE will fail the Acid2 test, Paul Thurrott says we should all boycott Internet Explorer 7 until Microsoft gets their act together and makes Explorer more secure and standards compliant.

standards and CSS in Internet Explorer 7
In the IEblog there are some comments on what will occur regarding standards compliance and CSS rendering in the upcoming release of Internet Explorer 7. There is a list of “finally” fixes that will be first seen in Beta 2. One feature that I have been anxious for is alpha channel in PNG images. That’s in there. Also, (more…)

Browser Statistics reaction
OK – someone has a sense of humor. In the hour after the browser statistics article where I said that on this site, Internet Explorer was being used by less than 50% of the viewers I saw an interesting thing happen. In the span of 2 minutes, 1 single IP address pulled EVERY link on the site, claiming to be browsing with IE 5.5 for a total of about 450 hits. Initially I thought, OK it’s either a search crawler masquerading as IE in the “User Agent” field, or somebody wanted to play with my stats. (more…)

Web browser statistics
In the last week or two, I’ve been playing around with a slightly different stat package for the individual sites, North Carolina Genealogy, South Carolina Genealogy and this site. Since it’s a new stat package, I’ve spent a good amount of time checking the stats to see just what browsers visitors are coming from, which ip blocks (local/distant), which search terms they’ve used to get here, etc. etc. One of the things that has surprised me is (more…)
