IE too dangerous to use?

In all fairness this is a year old news release from US-CERT. Beware of IE, certainly there have been patches for IE since this release (3 this week.) But have all of the issues they raise been dealt with? According to Secunia there are still 20 advisories related to Internet Explorer that are unpatched.

At one point in time there was a site that kept track of how many unpatched Internet Explorer Vulnerabilities there were. I’ve found a different site that does similarly (Secunia). Below is a graph from their site reflecting the CURRENT status of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer going back to 2003.

IE Security Vulnerabilities status

What’s even more remarkable is the AGE of some of these….. One in particular celebrates two years since its announcement on August 14th, 2005 (announced 2003, August 14th). This one is a remote exploit and is rated at 4 of 5 on their “criticality” scale.
