  • Google filtering some searches

It caught me by surprise at first. I had done a search and got the following…

    “We’re sorry…

… but we can’t process your request right now. A computer virus or spyware application is sending us automated requests, and it appears that your computer or network has been infected.

We’ll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your computer is free of viruses and other spurious software.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we’ll see you again on Google. ”

  • Yahoo passes Google in search database size

News.com (cnet) is reporting that Yahoo has surpassed Google in sheer numbers of items indexed in their search engine. Currently Yahoo has 20 billion documents and images, Google claims 11.3 billion. I can vouch from watching the logs at this site that the Googlebot has been trailing in visits compared to MSN and Yahoo both.

  • Google search optimization

I’ve just read a great article by Eric Wolfram on Google Search optimization. Well, it’s probably not a new article it’s been around for a while. I saw it referenced at marketingtom.com from February of 2004. He does have some good ideas though. Among other things the main idea is this…. provide good relevant information for site visitors.

  • Google Maps hybrid map seems more complete

A short while back, I compared MSN Virtual Earth and Google Maps, one of the things I noted was that the hybrid feature of MSN’s map was somewhat more complete, however I found a few errors. (The hybrid feature has a satellite image with road names and outlines superimposed over top.) I just noticed that the area I had looked at for comparison has improved on the Google Maps site, there is now more detail available. In fact, it’s complete in comparison to the standard map feature of the site.

  • New competition for Google Adsense in blogs

This article details an announcement from Yahoo about a new advertising network for small and medium size web publishers. The article compares the service lightly to Googles adsense (more details from Yahoo I’m sure to follow.) Also it mentions that in the 2nd quarter of 2005, Google brought in $630 million in “syndicated search revenue” which is a broad category including adsense.

  • Google cache revealing critical personal infromation

A while back I did an article on using Google search in some slightly more advanced ways, as well as a link to a site of specific Google searches. I’ve come across something in the Handlers diary at Incidents.org that is worth knowing about. The entry in question details that apparently someone made a BIG order for internet services that prompted the business to do a bit of research on the buyer. They found in Google’s cache a LOT of information – name, address, phone number, date of birth, credit card type, cc number, CCV2 #, credit card expiration, Social Security Number, bank pin number, account number, routing number, phone number, paypal email and password, drivers license number and state issued.
