When Google Talk first came out, many people were excited that they were using the protocol that jabber is built on. There were also disappointments that ALL of the protocol hadn’t been implemented. In fact, the biggest disappointment many had was that a jabber.org instant messenger user could not IM with a gmail.com user. That has all changed…. Google Talk now does “open federation” which basically means IM requests can be passed along from one server to another until it get’s to the server that the IM user is registered with.

Google Talk notes
Since Google Talk is based on the Jabber protocol (XMPP) it’s been compatible with any jabber client for instant messaging. That was a well and good move. Very welcoming to see a big name use an open protocol that can be implemented by anyone. There were some concerns though that the voice talk features were only supported in the Google Talk client and so, no one else would be able to get in on the voice features.

Google Talk on Linux using wine
Ok – so I’ve been looking at Google Talk all evening and thought I’d try it out. First, it will not run on Win98, only 2000, XP and 2003 are supported. It installs using crossover office (4.2) and starts. You get to see the main login screen. On any button click there is an internal error and the program vanishes.

Google Talk Instant Messenger Client review
Believe it or not, there’s already a review avialable of the yet to be announced Google Talk CLIENT. I have done a couple posts talking about the fact that some people have been able to access talk.google.com with Jabber compatible messengers. This review is of the official Google client that will be released.

Google Talk update – Instant messenger service already live
I found a post at slashdot that Google Talk is already live. Earlier in the day there was talk (sorry…) that they were using Jabber. It looks like this person has found a way to login with his Gmail address and password and is (using a jabber compatible client) logged in to Google Talk.

Google Talk Instant messaging and Voice messageing
The rumor mill is in full swing as USA joins in to report that sources are saying that Google Talk will be launched as early as Wednesday. They suggest that it will be instant messaging AND voice messaging.
