  • Microsoft’s unpatched security bugs

George Ou at ZDnet is mystified (as many of us are) at why Microsoft can’t patch ALL their security vulnerabilities. Most of the unpatched vulnerabilities are considered minor (as was the 6 month old bug that in the last week was discovered could be exploited for more than a Denial of Service…) His point is, if small companies (even open source groups) can patch ALL security bugs big and small, then why can’t Microsoft with it’s legions of coders?

  • Keeping up with news through RSS feeds.

Most of the visitors to this site already know about this, but I thought it might be worth an article. I remember an application years ago (1993?) that would let you setup multiple news sources and when the program loaded it would go, skim their sites and present you the new stories. It was a news aggregator of sorts, I don’t recall it’s name or what file format it used for the news feeds, but it was useful. These days it’s called RSS, there are standards, this site implements RSS feeds as do many others.

  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5 to be released November 29th

Word has it that Mozilla Firefox 1.5 will be released Tuesday, November 29th, 2005. It’s gone through three release candidates and a number of betas. I think there are some good improvements from what I’ve seen of the 1.5 release candidates. One of the features I like is the auto-update feature allowing updates from within the browser to automatically happen. (Also, the updates can be done on a smaller scale than the old “download the whole thing and reinstall the whole application.”)

  • More on Explorer vulnerability

Among other things… Sans has lowered the infocon to green, NOT that the threat is diminished, but there have been no new developments with regards to the announcement yesterday of a major Internet Explorer security vulnerability. Sans recommends browsing the web with firefox (with the noscript extension, so you can enable/disable javascript where you wish). There has not yet been evidence of an active attempt at exploiting the vulnerability, but the proof of concept code could be relatively easily changed.

  • Exploit for Unpatched Internet Explorer vulnerability

Well…. buckle your seatbelts it’s going to be a bumpy start to the week.

the securityfix as well as incidents.org are reporting on exploit code that has been released that takes advantage of an unpatched Internet Explorer vulnerability. According to the Sans institute diary entry… they have tested the exploit code and it remotely launched the calculator application, so this is a remote code execution vulnerability and can have SERIOUS consequences.

  • Netscape 7.1 download file could not be saved

I’ve run across this a couple of times and to save me a few more Google searches….

Under Netscape 7.1, trying to download a file, there is a long message (with a temporary file address), and the following…

(long path to file like c:\windows\temp\….. ) could not be saved because the source file could not be found. Try again later or contact the server administrator.

  • Google Adsense changes

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I use Google adsense on these pages. Now obviously I can’t give statistics on how it does, but frankly what I’ve seen in the short time I’ve used it beats any other affiliate-type program I’ve used before. Yes, I’ve received checks from Amazon’s associates program before, but initially there you had to have a different account for each site, so I’ve got several dollars there in each of 8-10 different profiles left over from the “dark ages”…

  • Firefox market share still growing

This should have made it into the last update, but…. it didn’t.

According to onestat.com and reported at desktoplinux.com the firefox browser is continuing to make market share gains. Now it stands at around 11% market share worldwide and 14% in the US.

  • Firefox vulnerabilities and 1.5 Release Candidate

I know there’s been at least one and probably a couple of Mozilla Firefox vulnerabilities announced in the last month or so. There are currently (according to Secunia) 3 unpatched Firefox vulnerabilities.
