So after installing the php-pcre package, I restart httpd and reload the mythweb page and find another error message. Very similar to the first, but slightly different. “Fatal error: Call to undefined function session_name() in /var/www/html/mythweb/includes/init.php on line 48” (At least we’ve made it to line 48…) Anyway, yes… there’s a php-session package and no it’s not installed (yet.) I’m a bit puzzled as to why 1) these two packages were not installed in the upgrade. 2) why mythweb didn’t see those as prerequisites… Anyway….

Mythtv mythweb error
After the Mandriva 2006 upgrade I’ve still been looking to find if there is anything ‘not quite right’…. anyway, I’ve run into an issue with mythweb. Mythweb is a web-based interface for the mythtv backend. It basically let’s you browse listings, schedule recordings, see what’s scheduled, etc. For me it’s kind of like checking one of the sites that has tv guide info. It’s even better because it’s local to the machine and let’s me go ahead and set recordings up. (And there are no obnoxious ads, or logins to remember…) Anyway, after the upgrade, the main page is throwing up this message… Fatal error: Call to undefined function preg_replace() in /var/www/html/mythweb/config/conf.php on line 29

Task manager has been disabled by your administrator
The first problem I ran into in cleaning up after my infested Windows XP image was this error message. One of the first things I do in cleaning an infested system is try to kill off running process that look suspect (or at least identify them.) On using ctrl-alt-delete I got the message “Task manager has been disabled by your administrator” To be honest I haven’t seen that one before and it sent me Googling…

Disinfecting a PC… part 7
Ok, another reboot after the BHO cleaning. Things are a good deal more responsive now, less disc swapping going on. (I suspect that those three missing BHO entries may have been causing the slow down, but I don’t know.) Installing wintop so that processes can be monitored. Also, getting spybot S&D *(search and destroy) installed and copying update from disc. The system is pretty much won at this point, I don’t see anything running that I haven’t LET run at boot, everything that I had as suspect has been disabled, now it’s just a matter of cleaning up the remnants and leftovers.

Google adsense unavailable
Just noticed that for the last (hour?) the main adsense login site has been down with an interesting multi-language error message page. Ads seem to be served still, but the login is offline at the moment. And back up by 1AM EST 12/17/05.

Disinfecting a PC… part 3
Picking up from last time… AVG was failing to install with a peculiar registry error. (Which I didn’t see much reference to online.) OK, so here is another fruit of the online search (so many bugs to identify…)
jawa32.exe is listed as spyware.seekseek in sarc’s database.
OK – let’s see if we can kill of some of these suspects… it’s time for a couple cycles of ctrl-alt-del to remove running processes that look suspect, followed by msconfig – disabling of processes running at boot, reboot, repeat.

Opera security patch
I saw this earlier today, but had thought it was an issue already covered (just before Thanksgiving there was an opera security update I think.) Anyway… Secunia has an advisory on a security vulnerability in the Opera Web browser. Users are encouraged to upgrade to v. 8.51. The SecurityFix has the story. Beware: Wolves in sheeps clothing found on different sites (security scams)
This is another “wolf in sheeps clothing” alert. The Sunbelt blog has information and tips on a number of other sites that are posing as either the Windows security center page, or a page not found error. The windows security center spoof once again claims the following “Attention! Your system is under control of remote computer with IP address >>>>>>> The remote computer has access to the following folders on your PC: \windows\system32 \program files\internet explorer \my documents drive C;\ files, click here to download official anti-spyware software. Your private info is collected by w32.sinnaka.a@mm”

Great online educational Games
One of the great things about computers is their potential to help teach/ help us learn. One of my favorite categories of software is that of educational. I remember spending long hours going through a states and capitals game back on the atari 400 years ago. I have also been fond of language vocabulary drilling games more recently. The nature of the web is that now many good tools like this are available online, finding them is the problem.
