My first thought was that this was a phishing email and I checked out the links in the message and the site of waveEgreetings.com because….

  • Warner Bros and 180solutions….

I think somewhere along the line, Warner Bros missed the memo that 180solutions is not a brand that many people would jump to associate with. Apparently 180Solutions has started making two Warner Bros shows (a soap opera and animated series) available for download on some of their sites including zango. Of course, the episodes come with bundled adware downloads which, I’m sure, “enhance your web browsing experience” by popping up relevant ad windows on your desktop.

  • /bash/rm: argument list too long

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this complaint from the bash shell when trying to remove a bunch of files. In this case, I was trying to clear a directory where log rotating had run amuck and there was a 10 second lag in typing ls ∗.gz and seeing any output…. So, I did rm ∗.gz and got bash/rm: argument list too long in response…. So, then I though I could “surgically remove” some files and shrink the list a bit… rm ∗5∗3∗2∗.gz -f; rm ∗5∗3∗1∗.gz -f, etc, etc, etc after about 4 of these it became obvious I’d need to find another way because even some of THOSE gave the “argument list too long” error. (What’s more, it looked like I was going to have to deal with files matching ∗[1-5]∗[0-9]∗[0-9]∗gz – yuck…)

  • Bittorrent is amazing

As I type this, I’m downloading a compressed hard drive image from the freeoszoo download page. The download size is about 1.2GB and it’s been BLAZING fast. (286KBps is the top I’ve seen) it’s been going – maybe 20-30 minutes and is 70% through…

  • Looks as though the FTC has broken up a spyware ring

A bit of good news on the spyware front, the FTC has announced that it’s frozen the assets of a spyware ring. Apparently they spread spyware through a network of sites and blogs that pushed ringtones, lyrics, and pictures. Good to see some progress made against spyware pushers….

  • Australian Linux consultancy lodges complaint against Microsoft Windows

A Melbourne based open source firm has lodged a complaint with that country’s Competition and Consumer Commision against Microsoft. According to The Computer Business Review online, they claim that Microsoft’s monopoly is harming consumers. They are calling for 1) the availability of computers without a preinstalled operating system and 2) the commision to force Microsoft to disclose any information that would allow for interoperability with their software.

  • Phish down – finally

Finally, I just checked and ~80 hours since my first emails the Bank of the West phishing site is finally down. (~32 hours since contacting the ISP and 8-10 hours since contacting Bank of the West.) I suspect the ISP probably is the one responsible as I’ve found 24-48 hour response time for ISP’s with virus complaints. (Note to self, first round of complaints should probably go to ALL contacts that might be directly responsible, domain owners, ISP and even spoofed company.) I hate that it took so long, but I’m glad that it’s down. I feel like I actually have accomplished something with all the time I’ve spent on it this week. (more…)
