In the past few days I’ve been working on an automated backup system for both my site databases and a few others. I thought I’d take a bit to go through what I’ve done. It’s really simple, but I suspect there are some that either don’t realise it’s this simple, or will think this is rocket science. Planning for disaster recovery
This covers all operating systems really. What would happen if your hard drive crashed right now? What data would you lose? What about if the server room flooded? What if your mission critical system went down. What data would you lose and how long would it take to be back up and running?

Server Outage
There is one domain that I host which are on a server that has had some major “issues”, backups are in the process of being reloaded and the current estimate is that they will be back up in about two and a half hours. It appears as though there were some data corruption problems, possibly with the first attempt to restore from backup. It appears that the backup restored will be from midnight the night before the outage.
