  • FeedForAll tweaking

I really have enjoyed using FeedForAll as a nice, customizable way to insert ANY RSS feed into a web page. I use it with some of my wordpress sites to get relevant news (relevant to the page in question) published without the toil of multiple daily updates. It’s a nice “set it and forget it” style tool.

Recently though I wanted to make some tweaks to the layout of some of my feeds:

  • Google Reader cache-ing feed behavior

In the last couple months I’ve been “farming out” several domains from the averyjparker.com site. I previously hosted my South Carolina Genealogy, North Carolina Genealogy and Online Radio TV sites all in the same virtual server as averyjparker.com. Well, I’ve noticed some strange behavior from Google Reader as a result…. read on.

  • WordPress Category RSS feed links

In working on the post related to software updates and making sure it was easy to find the category feed JUST for that led me on a “round the world” kind of quest to find a way to put the category feeds in the footer of pages in WordPress. The first thing I tried was this this category livebookmarks plugin, which gives some options to browsers that recognize feeds in the header of the page. It’s interesting, but I may wind up uninstalling. What I HAVE found is this solution which was EXACTLY what I was looking for.

  • RSS feed to spread the word of software updates

The computer security landscape today is such that pretty much ALL software, whether it’s Operating System, Office Suite, Web browser or device driver is at any given time “the weakest link”. One of my dreams as someone that does IT is “what IF there were an easy way to keep track of updates for software?” In fact, I would LOVE to see some sort of open source, rss based way of distributing news of updates. The way I see it working is as follows… The software writer has an rss feed reserved for product updates (one feed per product possibly?) This isn’t cluttered up with anything else, only things like…. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.6 – stability update – download link. Nice and simple, so that you could setup your feed reader to check the feeds of software that you use in your situation.

  • GMail vulnerability on Atom feed?

I don’t know about this, and will be curious to see what the answer is…. barrapunto.com had the link to a post from a Gmail user who notes… Gmail has the capability to have a feed of your new messages in Atom format. (We’re talking rss feeds here.) That’s all well and good. He went to bloglines though and tried to setup viewing of his feed…. and saw tons of email – NOT HIS.

  • Google Reader makes it easier to add RSS feeds to your profile

The Google reader team have been working on ways to simplify adding RSS feeds to your Google Reader profile. There are a couple ways now to do this (outside of logging into reader and entering the address (or site) and searching for the feed that way. First up is a little tiny button with a plus sign and the text “add to Google”.

  • Keeping up with news through RSS feeds.

Most of the visitors to this site already know about this, but I thought it might be worth an article. I remember an application years ago (1993?) that would let you setup multiple news sources and when the program loaded it would go, skim their sites and present you the new stories. It was a news aggregator of sorts, I don’t recall it’s name or what file format it used for the news feeds, but it was useful. These days it’s called RSS, there are standards, this site implements RSS feeds as do many others.

  • Google news rss feeds update

I was just at google news and noticed that they’ve apparently fixed the headers of their pages so that the “Add live feed” button automatically displays at the bottom of the firefox browser window when you browse their page. (I’m currently browsing it for a search.) Nice work Google…. I know when it was first announced this feature was not working which left me feeling as though it was slightly limited in it’s usefulness.

  • National Weather Service RSS feeds

I hadn’t seen this, but Slashdot is reporting that the national weather service is experimenting with RSS feeds for Weather alerts and their forecasts. Neat, I’ve already setup a feed for the local weather alerts here.

  • Google now officially giving news feeds

For some time the only way to get an RSS feed of google news was through third party scrapers. Well, according to The Google Blog. Now there are two flavors of OFFICIAL news feed from Google.
