  • Is 10:04PM the most creative time of day?

The telegraph brings us this survey which claims that 10:04 PM is the most creative time of day. To contrast that 4:33PM is the least creative time. It’s not clear HOW exactly the survey was conducted, but apparently I would be among the 25% of people that burn the midnight oil working on their ideas… What I find more interesting is that most people lose their creative ideas by failing to write them down!!! (Carry a small notebook with you, you’ll be glad to have it.)

Interestingly I’m writing this as we’re approaching 10:04PM local time!! So, what do you think – what is the most creative time of day? (Comments are Open

  • Jungledisk – online backup solution

How many online backup solutions ARE there now? Anyway I’ve seen another cross platform solution in JungleDisk. It’s available for Windows/Mac and Linux and uses Amazon.com’s storage as a backend. The software itself is free you just pay for the storage you make use of. (15 cents per GB using Amazon’s S3 service.)

  • Visualizing 4 spatial dimensions

I’ve always had more than a passing interest in astronomy and physics… so when I found reference to this video series explaining how to visualize four spatial dimensions. Multiple spatial dimensions are the domain of math, but I’ve always suspected that the universe has 4 spatial dimensions… anyway interesting stuff to think about.

  • Has Asheville NC Run out of gas?

Asheville NC Gas shortage, has some links and a gathering of prices and availabilities. It looks as though many stations in the Asheville area are out of gas.

  • Need to install Ubuntu linux on an HP Pavillion a6400f?

Linux does quite well on this machine, but there is a problem with the built in ethernet (gigabit adapter). The hardware appears to be detected correctly, but the network card doesn’t really work with the driver. Thankfully it’s a fairly easy fix… thanks to the ubuntu forums.

  • Megaupload alternative

I guess the better way to put this is that this is an alternative way to download from megaupload. megaupload.com is a file storage site. If you pay them you can have unlimited downloads, but normally they limit downloads to single ip addresses. (As well as limiting simultaneous downloads.)

I’m not certain of the ins and outs of how they’re doing this, but xmegaupload.com provides an alternate way to get to files if you’ve hit your maximum limit. (In fact altering the megaupload link to have xmegaupload.com was working last week as a way to get to megaupload files.)

  • Alfa 500mw usb wireless

I’ve seen some high powered wireless cards from Senao, but… 500mw I think is the most powerful wireless radio I’ve seen. This Alfa USB adapter appears to require 2 (!) USB ports for full power, but it can use just 1. It also appears that this is a USB wireless adapter compatible with linux (even some of the wireless scanning utilities on linux as well…)

  • Exception OE Has Occured at 0028:C004EA3A in VxD VCACHE(01)

Ugh…. you hate to see those exception OE messages. This particular one happened on an old Windows 98 machine. (Yes, I know, but they want to keep it in service if possible.) The full details are as follows

    An Exception OE has Occured at 0028:C004EA3A in VxD VCACHE(01) + 0000019A. … Was Called From 0028:C004BD2E in VxD VFAT(01) + 00009CB6

For starters I loved the detail that got recorded by my client – you feel like you can sink your teeth into that much better than “my computer crashed – it gave some strange error message – could you fix it?” Of course, when I looked at it I couldn’t reproduce the error and was told that it was maybe once per day.

  • BBPress 0.9x | WordPress compatible forum software

As you know I’ve used wordpress as a platform for many of my sites. It makes updating and adding information so quick and easy (as well as great extensions available for it and good theme possibilities.) Anyway, I’ve wanted forum functionality on a few sites as well and so I installed bbpress v. 0.8 some time back. I was able to integrate the installs with their respective WordPress installs and share users. At one point though,l I upgraded WordPress to 2.5.1 and a few weeks later when I tried to log into the forum…. my password was rejected. At first, I suspected a security breach, but tested the login with wordpress… it worked there, but not bbpress….

  • Good USB ThumbDrive – Kingston 8GB DataTraveler

Just thought I’d do a quick post – I’ve had kind of a poor track record in ordering USB thumb drives lately. I ordered one which I absolutely hate… it was about the size of one of those small pieces of gum and didn’t have the proper USB adapter on there so all you do is slide it into the usb port on your pc – the problem is… which direction – well they say it will only work one way and you’ll feel some resistance the wrong way, well I tried it and found resistance both ways so I got down on hands and knees and looked in the usb port to see where the contacts were and lined the stick up with those so I KNEW beyond a doubt I was connecting it the right way. I managed to get it in and thought I was never going to get the thing out. Since then I’ve been using a usb extension cable with that annoying thing…
