It looks as though IBM has some ideas about revolutionizing the way data on the internet is searched. Instead of keyword based searching, they will release technology that allows searching of concepts and facts.

Daylight savings time changes could cause problems
The Boston Globe has a story about todays energy bill signing and an issue which I mentioned once before. It seems that there are many devices that are hardwired to change to DST on a fixed schedule.

AOL purchases wireless company
AOL has purchased Wildseed according to The Register. Wildseed provides wireless “accessories” such as ring tones, video downloads, backgrounds, etc. AOL recently bought a company involved in online storage of files, Xdrive.

Trifinite clarifies some points on car whisperer
The big buzz in tech circles last week was the release of a tool called “car whisperer” which could allow someone to remotely insert audio into a bluetooth enabled vehicle. It was also possible, using the cars audio system to eavesdrop on the interior of the vehicle. Essentially, the folks at trifinite used a directional antenna, laptop and special software to take advantage of the fact that most manufacterors are not securing their bluetooth receivers with anything more than 0000 or 1234 for an access pin number.

PS3 ( Playstation 3 ) to be linux or Apple Tiger compatible
This interesting article says that Sony has released some information on the PS3 (Playstation 3) that says “The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple’s Tiger).” Prior to that in their release they mention that “Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB”. So is Sony looking to turn the PS3 into a desktop replacement?

Energy bill brings several expanded tax credits
This may not directly relate to computers, but one of my interests has been solar electric. I have a solar and battery system setup for powering small things when we have black outs and I also have an outbuilding that has a modest bit of power using solar with a sealed lead acid battery. At some point, I may do an article detailing those, as they’ve been fun projects. But, there are several articles out lately, like this one describing the tax credits in the energy bill which is to be signed today I believe.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter coverage
The Globe and Mail has a good writeup on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is schedule to lift off Wednesday from Florida. It mentions some of the other upcoming space missions related to Mars and mentions that this specific craft could be a stepping stone for a manned mission in part because of it’s large array of sensors.

AJAX threatening Windows?
Long ago there was talk about the desktop not meaning anything anymore and that software would be delivered through the web. Well, it looks as though AJAX has brought that closer to reality. Wired news takes a look at where things are in the arena. Explains what Ajax is and what makes it so meaningful. ( Google Maps is one site that uses “AJAX”).

DSL competitor access to lines ending
Among other sources, media law professors blog notes the FCC’s decision to reclassify broadband. Effectively the decision will remove the requirement of phone providers to allow for competitors to have access to their lines for the providing of DSL service.
