Google search optimization

I’ve just read a great article by Eric Wolfram on Google Search optimization. Well, it’s probably not a new article it’s been around for a while. I saw it referenced at marketingtom.com from February of 2004. He does have some good ideas though. Among other things the main idea is this…. provide good relevant information for site visitors.

Newsflash right? Well, for some it may be. He carries this further. Suggesting that as a business site linking to competitors should not be taboo. He gives an example on a website he does where several of their competitors are listed (and linked), their site turns up high in searches for their competitors products. Not bad.

Most of the point that he gets at is this. The web is designed to be just that a web of interconnected pages. Usually these pages are interconnected by ideas. Software related pages linking to other software related pages, genealogy pages to other genealogy pages and so on. However somewhere along the way marketers came in and made the decision as to what a corporate web image should look like and it worked counter to the nature of the web.

He talks quite a bit about google and some things he has seen in their spidering of his site with the googlebot. There were some things that people working at google couldn’t explain about googlebots behavior, but he noticed and changed his site to take advantage of the way his site was being spidered. Now of course, google isn’t the only game in town, but it does drive a lot of traffic.

Interesting ideas that might give you or your business site a bit more leverage.
