I saw this last week but never took the time to mention it. Codeweavers has announced their roadmap for 2005 and 2006. Codeweavers of course is the company that makes crossover office (a wine implementation to allow several windows applications to run under linux). Codeweavers is a major contributor to the Wine project

Zotob.b may be affecting some XP SP2/2003 installs
As I noted yesterday, virii typically get updated and improved. Yesterdays reports about the zotob virus noted that Windows Xp service pack 2 and Windows 2003 were not affected by the new worm. Today however, the sans institute is reporting that zotob may be affecting some XP sp2 and 2003 installs. It appears that it uses something called NULL sessions.

Light Linux Desktop for older pcs?
I’ve seen a story over at Desktop linux about the release of Turbolite 2005. Which is based on Turbolinux. It’s targeted at older, refurbished hardware. They offer “all the essential functions required for a desktop PC, including a Mozilla Web browser and email client, a Flash player, and streaming multimedia capabilities.”

Linux desktop rallying cry
Over at Desktop Linux there’s an opinion piece that’s really a rallying cry for the linux desktop. Free Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows
Barrapunto.com is reporting on a Noticias.com article (on another story by… sorry… got carried away.) Their reporting on a freely available Ext2 Ext3 driver for Windows. It should allow full read/write access (although I would quail at allowing Windows to write to ext2 or 3…. just me though.)

He intends to ask Microsoft for an unconditional warranty that the operating system is free from major bugs that could lead to security vulnerabilities. (Good luck with that one…)

Raft of Microsoft updates out – time to get updating
The promised batch of windows updates for today are now out and it turns out there were 3 critical updates out of the 6 released. It looks as though the biggy is an RPC problem with the plug and play system (Plug and play needing a remote procedure call?) This is one that could likely be quickly exloited. There is a workaround on this of having port 139 and 445 firewalled (many places do that by default now, last I checked my ISP does.) Don’t take that as a tool for complacence though. Patch it anyway!

Browser competition, market decisions and open standards
I just read a blog entry at zdnet. The writer, John Carroll, essentially asserts that the free market has chosen that monopoly in the case of the web browser IS what’s best for it. There are a few things that I think he fails to take into account in his perspective on browsers and competition.
