  • Vista software compatibility concerns and license restrictions…

    I should say that George Ou has been trying to put to rest some of the concerns people have about “will xyz program run on vista”. The All About Microsoft blogpost on virtual PC seems to have started all this. I should say that virtual machines seem to be a good way to make sure that whatever “ye olde application” doesn’t work perfectly well in a new OS can still run. (I have a couple of old DOS applications that I’ve revisited this way.) (By the way, this is a question many people ask whether it’s a new version of windows or if they run other Operating Systems..) I was a bit more interested to read about some of the licensing terms for the various Vista flavors…

  • Firefox zero-day vulnerability (or is it?)

    I saw a comment somewhere else that zero-day was overused and in essense ANY previously unknown vulnerability in open source software is technically zero day… the intent here though is to use the word in this context…. “vulnerability has been released without giving the vendor an opportunity to patch…” Yes, the fun vulnerability weekend seems to be continuing – there’s a javascript zdnet has coverage it’s “impossible to patch” (?) from the individuals that have publicized it. The announcement came at Toorcon.

  • Virtual Machine of a real hard drive

    This incidents.org article the other day caught my eye. It talked of a utility calledliveview that could take a hard drive (or image of a drive) and make it into a virtual machine for use in vmware (saving all changes to a temporary file so the original structure of the disk/drive image is not touched.) It looks like you need to have Windows as your base platform, but it looks as though it would be a useful tool. Windows Incident Response possibly saw the same note on Incidents.org.

  • But it’s brand new, how could it have so many updates?

    This morning I was doing a fresh install of Windows XP SP2 into a Virtual Machine. So far, things are fine I went through windowsupdate and found 3 updates the first time, then rebooted and hit windowsupdate again to see 55 updates available. A lot of times when I set up a new pc for somebody they wonder why I want to check windows update multiple times. They’ll usually say something along the lines “but it’s brand new there shouldn’t be any updates.” Well, this install was from a SP2 disk and there have been a large number of updates since that was released. Many manufacturers use fairly sophisticated techniques to roll out the default install images they use, but it’s still very possible that your machine will have several updates waiting for it when you get it.
