After several weeks of good behaviour from Evolution 2.4 since the Mandriva 2006 upgrade, I started getting a wierd error on sending messages *(Mail From response Error Unknown). Nothing within my settings for Evolution had changed since the night before when things worked… I tested with Kontact and was able to send mail, closed it, opened it, bonobo-slay’ed it… still getting the error, so… since I was on the fence as to whether or not I was going to migrate to Kontact, I went ahead with it. I’ve already covered moving the calendar and contact (addressbook) information in a previous post. So this will be on moving the messages.

WMF exploit virus detection revisited
Yesterday, when I was testing the WMF exploit against a Windows 98 virtual machine, I sent samples through virus total and the only antivirus product to detect each of them was “TheHacker” from hacksoft. This evening I was revisiting the exploit (with the new rule for metasploit) and saved 20 samples which I also tested with virustotal. The results this evening are better. This evening 4 antivirus products detected each one.

WMF vulnerability checker
The same person that has given the New Year’s gift of an unofficial patch for the WMF exploit circulating has also provided a WMF vulnerability checker, download and install, it will tell if you’re vulnerable. Post is available here. According to the first comment it seems as though the vulnerability checker is triggering Norton’s auto-protect. (Norton detects it as “Bloodhound.Exploit.56”). (Which is a good sign…)

Mythtv mythweb error
After the Mandriva 2006 upgrade I’ve still been looking to find if there is anything ‘not quite right’…. anyway, I’ve run into an issue with mythweb. Mythweb is a web-based interface for the mythtv backend. It basically let’s you browse listings, schedule recordings, see what’s scheduled, etc. For me it’s kind of like checking one of the sites that has tv guide info. It’s even better because it’s local to the machine and let’s me go ahead and set recordings up. (And there are no obnoxious ads, or logins to remember…) Anyway, after the upgrade, the main page is throwing up this message… Fatal error: Call to undefined function preg_replace() in /var/www/html/mythweb/config/conf.php on line 29

Mythtv remote frontend
So, when I did the laptop upgrade I formated the root partition which means that working mythtv frontend was erased and it had to be set up from scratch. I had been running version 0.16 of mythtv on all the systems, but finding rpms for that older version looked challenging, so…. I went ahead with the upgrade to 0.18.1 on the desktop first. All went fairly smoothly using Thac’s rpms of mythtv.

5198 Security Vulnerabilities tracked by US-CERT in 2005
The headline probably says most all… 5198 vulnerabilities tracked by US-Cert in 2005. This comes from The SecurityFix. It’s probably not every vulernability that was out in 2005, just those that US-CERT issued advisories for. The breakdown is 812 in Windows 2,328 in various Unix/Linux/Mac/BSD systems and 2,058 affecting multiple operating systems. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of core operating system vulnerabilities versus, addon software. One problem with this kind of breakdown is most linux distributions ship the addon software with the core operating system. That’s likely why it doesn’t get tracked that way.

Kaffeine no sound
Ok – so now post upgrade to Mandriva 2006 I sit down to try something out. Put a dvd in the drive and see what happens. I rarely sit and watch dvd’s on the desktop, but it’s always been a possibility… So, when I pop the disc in, kaffeine pops up with it’s “install” sequence – checks to see what’s on the system and what’s not what version of kde, libdvdcss, dvd, dvb hardware, etc….
So, the disc pops up and no sound…. hmm. maybe it’s just kaffeine…

Network administration over the holidays
Nobody wants to be tied to their job over the holidays, but what if someone has hacked your servers and is using your machine to scam thousands of people a day? Does that keep for two weeks? Does someone monitor the abuse address? Incidents.org has a post on messages they’ve got from some reporting to abuse administrators receiving back vacation notices that things are basically on “autopilot until sometime next year.”

The 2nd journey begins… Mandriva 2006 upgrade 2 – Part 10
I think it’s time to wrap things up. The KDE start new session option is back after the changes I mentioned to the /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc file I mentioned in a previous post. There are no outstanding issues from the upgrade. (I need to adjust the font sizes down a bit, but that’s not a big deal.) This series, of course, has been spread out over days. The actual event covered two afternoon’s/evening’s. The first day was the attempted urpmi upgrade (which didn’t go too well.)
